red mail Jacksons in Handsworth
I've been trying to trace what happened to my greatgrandfather & his wife after 1911. In that census he was at 279 Rookery Rd, Handsworth - Thomas William Jackson, wife Elizabeth, and four of his children. In 1919 his daughter Edith Mary married Cecil Charles Webber at St James, Handsworth, age 27, and gave her address as 129 Linwood Road. Her father was still alive then. I have been told that he died c1961, but I can find no record to confirm this, and I do not know when his wife died - probably between 1939 & 1945. I have been told that Birmingham Library would be the place to consult directories and electoral registers for Handsworth, but the staff won't do research, and as I live in London I'm a bit stuck. Can anyone help, please? Update - Thanks to some help from members, I have now found a selection of years of electoral registers on Ancestry. They were at 129 Linwood Rd by 1919 to 1927 at least; 1 Dawson Rd, Handsworth, 1935-39 approx. Elizabeth probably died between 1939 & 1945. In 1945 to 1950 he was at 54 Hinstock Road, Handsworth, with daughter Maud Brawn & family. The Brawns moved to Norfolk by 1953 and he may have moved with them. C/T him in 1955 register. Another of his daughters, Constance Gertrude Jackson, married Herbert Grantham Latham. They were at 25 Philip Victor Road, Handsworth, in 1939, but died in 1945 and 1948. Their daughter Constance Patricia Latham (known as Pat) married Harry Millington Turner in 1947. I don't know if they had any children, but would love to hear from any relatives.

John Phillips, b. 1826 West Bromwich (parents Peter Phillips and Rebecca Whyley) married Maria Bettridge (parents Maria Bettridge and Joseph Bettridge) in 1853 at Edgebaston. John was a blacksmith. They had the following children. George Bettridge b.1854 Handsworth, Hannah Bettridge b.1856 Handsworth, Joseph Bettridge b. 1859 Thomas Street (West Bromwich) and Maude Miranda 1862, Connection Street Handsworth. She was a cripple. John died in 1871 and Maria then married Jesse Golsby. She died in 1882. I have found that George married Jane Blizzard from Pershore and that he was a jeweller's port (whatever that means) and that they had a daughter Florence. Jane died and he remarried. Ancestry census results showed that he went to America where 4 more children were born. Florence went to live in Pershore with her mother's brother and his wife. Hannah married Benjamin Heath and they went to Australia in 1881. I have been unable to find what happened to Joseph but a family story says that he joined the railway and went to live in London. As for poor Miranda, I found that she ended up in an institution but havent found her death. Does anyone know how I can find where Maria and John are buried and/or how to find church records recording their deaths (her name now Golsby) Is there anyone out there who is connected to this family ?

red mail Willoughby and Chalcraft
My Great Great Aunt Harriet CHALCRAFT married Edward WILLOUGHBY on 8th April 1871 in St James Church, in the parish of Handsworth in Stafford. He was 33, a machinist and she was 22. His father was Charles WILLOUGHBY, a farrier and her father was Edward CHALCRAFT a carpenter. The bride and groom both resided in Alfred Street at the time of their marriage, and I presume that Alfred Street was in Handsworth, and since the wedding was just a few days after the census return I thought I would find them there. I cannot find any of these people on the 1871 census return, or confirmation of Edward anywhere as most of the Edward Willoughby's were living away from their parents. Harriet became a widow before the 1881 census. Edward and Harriet had three children, Edward, Christine and Edith, If anyone comes across them while doing their own research I would be extremely grateful.
