Mottershaw/Mothershaw/Moddershaw/Mottashaw
I am researching ancestors in Ashley, Staffs (the Moreton Say sub-district of Market Drayton) between 1811 and 1881. The surname was spelled in a number of ways (3 of these in the heading). Robart and Mary Mothershaw had 5 children between 1812 and 1819: Msry, James, Robart, Elizabeth and William (Robart & William died in infancy. James married Martha, then Mary and had 4 children: Mary, Elizabeth, Henry and James (the last died in infancy). James was an agricultural labourer and lived all his life in Ashley. The family surname seems to have its origin in Staffs, possibly connected to Mothershall Hall, and was uncommon outside Staffs, Shropshire and Derbyshire. The Mottashaw variant took hold in my family but by the mid-20th century we were the only family with that spelling of the name - and there is now only one boy to carry it on! But where are the Staffordshire Mottershaws we must be related to? Please contact Janet
