Looking for information about the family of JOHN SLADE,(Father JOSEPH SLADE) born c1817, in Cudworth, Somerset. His occupation was a Whitesmith. He married EMMA FEAR also from Somerset, born c1817. One of their children was ALFRED JOHN SLADE - occupation Printer (letterpress) and a Printer Machine Minder. Who was also known as JOHN SLADE. He married a FANNY E HAMP and lived in the Bermondsey area of London. He also moved to Newton Le Willows in Lancashire, for a while, where his daughter ROSE, was born. Their son (also named John) married his cousin Grace White in 1739 in St Benet Paul's Warfe, London. John and Elizabeth also had 3 other sons Joseph, Stephen and Edward. I have a Brice Genealogical Tree from Progentitor John Brice (na 1320; ob 1346 at Crecy) prepared in 1875 by Charles E N Brice and Major General George Tito Brice -17th Ft Regiment (na 1830; ob 1905). I am hunting for links through the Christian name Worthington BRICE for my own direct line, which emantes from Dinnington,Somerset and surrounding area. It could be helpful to trace the derivation of the Christian Name Maximilian prior to 1722. Could it be from the Maiden Name of a BRICE Wife? BAULCHE/CORDING/WAY/HAWKING/HAWKINS are posiblities. His father Thomas Rendall died in 1829 aged 80 - which estimates his birth year as c1749 - i believed his parents to be John and Mary as a founs a marriage for them in Litton in 1744 - they did have a son called Thomas born c1748 who could be Thomas my grt grt grt grt grandfather but i have since found a Thomas Randle born in Chew Magna in 1749 - they spell his name like this on igi - this one however wasnt bap at St Andrews as i have records - i believe Dundry was part of Chew Magna at that time so think he may have been bap their so i need to obtain records - my grt grt grandfathers daughter Martha Rendall married at Dundry - she became a Weare/wear and died in Clutton Union workhouse in 1901,if anyone recognises thesse name and has Rendalls from Chew Magna,Dundry and surrounding areas then please get in touch Mark

When Nathaniel HARDEN died in 1818 he, according to probate, owned about 48 acres of land in Edington and Burtle Hill, some of which was purchased by John KING, father of Nathaniel's second wife, Mary KING. His children mentioned in his will were John, James, George, Jane, Mary and Anne (Maria?). James and George both went to London where James married Isabel CASTLE. They immigrated to Australia in 1839. Robert DURSTON and John MARTIN were witnesses to Nathaniel's will.

Ever wondered where in Somerset would be a place to settle? Once an "outpost" of Burnham and supposed burial site of of the saxon Queen Edith, although there is nothing yet come to light to prove it. Its approach from Burnham has now been effectively bisected to provide a link road to the M5 Motorway, but it still retains its little missionary church and most of the present housing (if not all?) has replaced the earlier 18th century country dwellings.

John Flewellen, born in Old Cleeve in 1826 married Betsy Hobbs in Withycombe in 1852. In 1861 we find the family at 79 Church Street Wiveliscombe. They comprise :- John 33, Betsy 31, Amelia 7, Mary Ann 2, Richard Poole 29 a police constable and Charles Stennor 30 a tailor as is John. One daughter, Rosa Jane has already died less than a year old. By 1864 Mary has died but George Henry has been born. Sadly John dies in 1865 and the 1871 census shows Betsey Flewellin living in Ford. She is taking in washing, Robert is an erand boy and George is still at school. Amelia, who will later marry a King, must be out at work. What happened next? Did Betsy re-marry? The boys,later on, appear in Bristol.

Seeking any information on the family of William Knight b.1790 at Stowey, Somersetshire, England. In about 1814, Wm. arrived at the farm of William Hodges at Goathurst near Bridgewater, Somerset and married one of William Hodges' daughters, Mary, in about 1816. Wm. and Mary had 4 children: Catherine, Elizabeth (b.1817), and twin boys Abraham and Isaac (b.30 Mar 1819). We know nothing of Catherine. Elizabeth married James Miller in 1840 and they had 2 children, Ellen and William. Isaac apparently married, had a large family and after his death in 1861, his family moved to Wales. Abraham emegrated to Canada (Simcoe County, Ontario)where he married a cousin Jane Hodges. They had 6 children: William R., Mary, Jennie and Abraham were born in Canada; Isaac and Harry were born in Iowa and remained in the US. Following his father's death in 1860, William R. returned to Canada with his mother. He is my paternal great-grandfather. Abraham's cousin Richard Hodges was also a descendant of William Hodges at Goathurst. Richard Hodges and his wife Mary Jane nee? emegrated to Simcoe County, Ontario and later to Irvington, Kossuth Co., Iowa (USA) where they had 4 daughters (Lelitia, Louisa, Emma and Clara).

John Barnett was born in 1781 at Greinton as was his father, John served in the peninsular wars between 1800 and 1815 then he was medicaly discharged. His discharge papers show that he suffered from chronic rhumatism. He then became a chelsea pensioner. His wife Mary is shown on Bridgewater area census with John and children in 1841 as the Inn keeper of The Red Lion Inn, which as far as we can see is next to the Abbey itself at Glastonbury. Johns son carried on as an Inn Keeper in a Inn with another name by 1851. At this time John Barnett is shown living in Almes Houses at Glastonbury living as a widow with his daughter and her husband and son. Johns family lived in the area from 1707 which is as far so far as I have record for.

In the parish register for St. John the Baptist church, Heathfield, Somerset, there was a marriage between a John Towells and Sarah Colsworthy. There were two dates, 5/12/1796 and 21/12/1802. There is a baptism for William Towells, 24/4/1803. Also a Jam (could be James) Towells, baptised 29/6/1806. Does anyone have information on this family? Regards Irene
