Abraham Reed c.1815/16
Looking for anyone who has this gentleman in their tree. He married Mary Thorn Pasmore in 1839 at Exeter Devon. H e states his father is William a Baker. In census he says hes from Taunton but the only christening I've found is in 1815 at Lydeard. There is another Abraham at Wooton - this is not him. I descend from their child William Henry b. 1854 Clerkenwell. Chasing this one for many years now...all help welcome.
red mail The John NEWTON Family
I am researching my 3x Great Grandfather John Newton (born 25 Dec 1794). I believe he married a Phoebe possibly Smetham on 5 Nov 1815 at St Mary Taunton. The family of seven children were Henry, Harriet (who married my 2x GGF and came to Australia), Sarah, Matilda, John, Helen and William. John was a Cooper as were his wife and eldest son Henry. John Snr died between the 1841 and 1851 Census periods. A Henry Newton was in the Lambeth Workhouse in London in 1881 and a Phoebe Newton's death registered in the Lambeth area in 1876. Would greatly appreciate any information anyone has on this family please.
red mail Birth Records 1840s cont'd
It appears to be normal for birth certificates from Taunton in the 1840s NOT to show the father's name when the mother was unmarried. If anyone has a birth certificate from the Union Workhouse Taunton dated in the early 1840s that DOES show the father's name it would clinch it for me. Thanks.
red mail Birth Records 1840s
I have two birth certificates from the England and Wales Birth Index 1837-1915 that are from the early 1840s Bishop's Lydeard, Taunton, Somerset in which there is no Fathers Name. Was it common practice at that time to only record the mother's name and not the father? Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
red mail William Young, Yea Family, White Hall
I am researching the life of William Young, born Bishops Lydeard, Taunton, Somerset in 1848. He appears in the 1851 England Census with his elder brother George living with the family of William and Sarah Yea/Yeo at White Hall Buildings, St James, Taunton. They are both described as orphans. Can anyone tell me more about how the Yea family may have come to look after them eg was their father William a farm labourer colleague, and also anything about White Hall Buildings. Information about the death of their parents would also be appreciated. William Jnr joined the army at age 18yr and went to India where he married Ellen Offerman and had two children.
red mail John Wimbridge
UK Prison Hulk Register shows b about 1817. Age 19 years convicted at Taunton sent on convict ship'Sarah' Departed London 22 Dec 1836 for Van Dieman's Land - now known as Tasmania. Is this Your relative.? 'The Sarah had already been to Australia and sailed back so she was relatively new and watertight. On the 22nd December 1836, the Sarah left Portsmouth harbour with the wind blowing from the north-north-east. When the Sarah got out into the English Channel, she was taking heavy seas over the forecastle and washing the convicts out of their bunks in the orlop deck. This bad weather lasted for a week and soaked the convicts and crew. Eventually as the ship sailed south, the weather cleared up and the convicts could dry their clothes and bedding. As they approached the equator they got more pleasant weather and the health of the convicts got a lot better.' John did survive and make a life though, not in my family line. I entered these details in the hope someone may recognised a member of John's family.
red mail Greed
I am looking for information concerning a Mrs. Greed of 47 East Reach Taunton,in the year 1911. My grandmother, Nellie Woolway, came from St. Thomas, Exeter to have her baby here. She was about 14 years old at the time and her husband was Frederick Woolway, and stationed at Plymouth. Woolway was both her maiden and married name. I have no idea why she should have gone there, to give birth, unless Mrs. Greed was a relation. I believe that no 46 was Cox's hostel 1833-1945. But a hostel for whom? Her son, my father was later known as Woolway- Medland. Again I do not know why.
Sarah Chaulkin or any other Chaulkin
Sarah Chaulkin estimated dates 1726-c. 1775 was, interestingly, a book-seller and printer in Taunton in 1744. She had much to do with the Upton family The Rev. James Upton M.A. 1687-1749 was the Headmaster of Taunton Free Grammar School and Rector of Hillbishops, now Bishop's Hull. He was married to Mary Proctor of Old Windsor when he was teaching at Eton College where he had been as a pupil, after their deaths Sarah paid for the memorial to them both that is still on the wall in the church at Bishops Hull. She mentions approximately twenty-one persons in her will, all seemingly living locally to Taunton at that time. If any of this is of potential interest to others please contact me, ver happy to share information.
