red mail John Davies Pontesbury (Pontesford Hill) 1817 - ?
William DAVIES and Mary PARRY married 18 Feb 1816 in Pontesbury, and later had 6 children, Jemima DAVIES (1816), John DAVIES (1817), Mary DAVIES (1819), Sarah DAVIES (1821), Josiah DAVIES (1822) and Philip DAVIES (1824). They lived on Pontesford Hill, which is about 1 mile outside Pontesbury. William DAVIES was a Skinner by trade, and also seems to have been Pontesbury Parish Clerk, until his death in 1830. As Parish Clerk, William would need to be literate, and it looks like most / all of his children could at least sign their names on Wedding Certificates, and were probably able to read and write. After John DAVIES'S christening at Pontesbury, on 13th April 1817, nothing is known about John, until he seems to named as "Father of the Bride" at his brother Philips wedding to Elizabeth SHERRY, 21st September 1846 in Wolverhampton. At this time, John's occupation is put down as "Malster", there is no way of knowing if this John DAVIES was actually Philips brother John, or somebody else, with the same name. Philip DAVIES and Elizabeth SHERRY gave "Duke Street, Wolverhampton" as their address, on their wedding certificate, and I have come across a passing reference to a John DAVIES who lived on Duke Street circa 1846, but this John DAVIES doesn't appear to have been living on Duke Street for the 1841 or the 1851 census, and may well have just been somebody with the same name, and so therefore,a total red herring. In later life, these 6 children went their separate ways, with some going to the Manchester area, some to the Wolverhampton area and some staying in Pontesbury. Census searches of Shropshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire found a number of John DAVIES'S but none of which would appear to have been the "correct" John DAVIES. Some of William DAVIES and Mary PARRY'S descendants, I've traced right down to living relatives, but John has stayed stubbornly hidden. Whilst primarily trying to find John, information about William and Mary and any of their descendants (or Ancestors) would also be most welcome. Thank You. Peter

red mail Judith Rogers b 1838 Chapel Lane
Judith Rogers is my great grandmother born 2nd February 1838, father Thomas Rogers (Weaver), mother Mary Rogers (nee Edwards)living in Chapel Lane, Pontesbury She married Thomas James a miner (thought to have a moved to Pontesbury from S Wales) and then moved to live in Brownhills Staffs where she became a seamstress and he continued work as a miner I am trying to trace the James line back to South Wales but with a name like Thomas James it won't be easy However the mining link might be useful since I believe that the private pit owners in the Brownhills area must have recruited experienced miners from areas such as Pontesbury since they did not have a labour force skilled in the locality My questions are Is there any trace of the Rogers family in Pontesbury (the schol has been mentioned in chats with my now deceased granfparents? and Was there a mining industrey in the Pontesbury area? Many thanks in anticipation Regards David

red mail MADDOX family search
I am researching the TUNSTALL/MADDOX families and, in particular, I am trying to trace the ancestors (and any details) of a Thomas MADDOX, farmer and timber merchant, of PONTESBURY (Salop). His family had lived for several generations on a farm at PONTESBURY. His date of birth is unknown but probably between 1775-1780 if he married in his mid-20's. In 1802 he married a Mary MORGAN and had five children (not in order of age): (1) Mary, who married a Henry TUNSTALL (b; 1810; d.1854) (2) Thomas, (3) John, (4) Martha and (5) Ian who had a son, Thomas. My interest is that the MADDOX family married into the TUNSTALL family in 1832 when Henry TUNSTALL married Mary MADDOX.
