Scotland (Country)
This page is for entries which apply to the whole of Scotland, eg general information on Scotland , one name studies covering the whole of Scotland and enquiries when you have no idea which part of Scotland your surnames came from. Scotland had 34 historic counties. In 1975 these were abolished and replaced by 9 regional councils and 3 island councils. Now 32 unitary authority districts. Curiousfox uses the historic counties.

red mail McMillan
Hi, I am in need of some local knowledge. Sarah McMillan born 1813, came to Australia in 1838 with her husband Robert Clarke born 1812. They sailed on the 'William Rogers'. On ship's documents, Sarah's native place is listed as what looks like 'Eallomer', Scotland. The entry is hand written but seems reasonably clear. I cannot find such a town....can anyone help please? Robert was a native of Kirkcudbright; could it be some place close to there? Also, the occupation of Sarah's father, James McMillan, looks like 'overseer of the school'. Could this be correct and what would that job translate to today? Cheers.........Jenn

red mail William Fulton and wife Isabella
Would anyone know of William Fulton born about 1810 - 1815, who married Isabella (surname not known) born about 1810, possibly married about 1835 in Glasgow? They had a son William Alexander Bell Fulton born on 12 March 1847 (as per family bible) who came out from Scotland/England in about the 1850s to 1860s to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. I would welcome any information as I am having difficulty tracing the family prior to Tasmania. Family folk lore has it that William junior was about six years of age when he arrived in Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land, now Tasmania. An oil painting exists of him in a red Scottish tartan attire, painted by an Irish artist, William Paul Dowling, who had been a convict and became a free settler. Painting has Hobart Town watermill and mountain in background. Family lore also mentions that there may be some relationship to the Stewarts of not sure where and the Isle of Bute has also been mentioned. My relatives who may have had some clues have now all passed on and I would like to trace my g gfather and gg gfather and more if possible, just finding it hard to get a start back this far. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. Cheers, Vicki
