Catlin Family of Uppingham
I am looking for information on the CATLIN family of Uppingham, especially JOHN born 1803(?) and anything further back. I believe his father may have been MATTHEW but cannot verify at the moment. The family owned the Horse & Trumpet from 1799 having acquired it from John Nutt and were still running it in the 1880s (Frances Thorpe nee Catlin and her husband James Thorpe). I have been trying to find a picture of the pub as I understand it was demolished in 1960. Later Catlins (also JOHN) went to Finchley to work as a gardener and a number of children were born there but returned to Uppingham and died there in 1909. His son was OLIVER EDGAR (known as BEN) who died in 1954. Don't suppose anyone remembers him or his son MATTHEW CHARLES (my grandfather) born at Beaumont Chase?
red mail Thorpes of Uppingham
My 3x Great Grandfather was William Thorpe (1787-1862) Uppingham, he was a stonemason, decended from the Thorpes of Kings Cliffe He married Charlotte Harris Bull and their Children were: Albine, Daniel, Judith, Leonard, Josiah, Charlotte, Caroline, Storey, Benjamin and Rachel (my 2x Great Grandmother.) Rachel married Charles Stokes and their children were: Harriet, Albine, Charlotte, Benjamin, Bertha and Edwin (my Great Grandfather). All her children were born in Uppingham but the family lived in Drayton, Leicestershire according to the census records. The Thorpe family of Uppingham is well documented and researched; and thanks to other family researchers I have a wealth of knowledge about dates, places, people and such, but most of it is in other lines of the Thorpe family. I am curious to find anyone connected to the Thorpe family; William and Charlotte's other children's families, or Rachel and Charles other children's families; anyone who might have information or letters, photographs, documents, artifacts etc of the family. I'd love to see photo's of Rachel and her siblings and her children and to know more about the lives they led. Any info would be much appreciated.

red mail PALMER HUNT
Hi I am researching Thomas Palmer who was christened on 16th January 1730 AT Uppingham, Rutland. I believe he married Mary Hunt in Stamford in 1762 or 1767. They had at least two daughters Elizabeth born in 1773 and Mary born in 1777 both in Uppingham. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
red mail Thorpe Family/ Stokes
I am searching for the Thorpe family of Uppingham, Rutland. My G G Grandmother was Rachael Thorpe, born abt 1830 to William and Charlotte. Charlotte's maiden name is Harris Bull. Rachael had an older sister Caroline and 2 brothers, the younger was Benjamin but we can't make out the name of her older brother on the 1841 census. His name has been transcribed as SLORY but it could be STORY. Either way they are strange names and we would like to know what his name really was. Rachael married Charles Stokes in 1849, he was from down the road in Drayton, Leicestershire. It seems they lived in Drayton all their married life as all 6 of their children were born in Drayton - Harriett 1854, Albine 1859, Charlotte A 1863, Benjamin 1864, Edwin 1870 (my G Grandfather) and Bertha M 1872. Rachael died in 1878. Any info on the Thorpe family or the Stokes family would be fantastic.

They had 2 other brothers CHARLES HORACE GREEN (b. abt 1861) and ROBERT GREEN (b. 13 Aug 1866). red mail Southwell/Broadway/Vincent
my mother was vincent, my grandparents were broadway, before great grandmother was southwell. all have lived in uppingham for a long time.
Elizabeth Berridge was born about 1821 in Uppingham, Rutland, and died after April 1881 in Peterborough. She married William Templeman (born ?1819 ?Northborough Northants – died after April 1881 in Peterborough). Her father was probably William Thomas Berridge and her mother's maiden name was probably Gilbert. She may have had a brother Seth Berridge who lived in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Elizabeth Berridge and her husband were probably Nonconformists (Congregationalists). There is a very strong tradition in my family that she was related to the Berridges of Stamford, Lincolnshire, but she should NOT be confused with Elizabeth Berridge born 1809 in Stamford, or with another Eliza (Elizabeth) Berridge, born 1821 in Stamford, both daughters of Henry Berridge and his wife Jane. Can anyone help please? Please do not contact me again if you responded to my March 2005 message (unless you have new information).
red mail Freer, Taylor, Dunn, Skea
Re Freer of Uppingham We have an ANN FREER born in Uppingham in March 1825 and Bap. at Ebenezer Independent in Oct 1825. Believe her parents to be William FREER & Mary Ann GOODRICH. She found her way to South Australia and married a JAMES H TAYLOR - born in abt. 1827 probably in Queenborough, Kent or thereabouts. We have also a John DUNN TAYLOR married to an ELIZABETH FREER. Ann FREER had a sister Elizabeth b 1813. The Elizabeth FREER that we know of from Australian records was bearing children as late as 1864. James Taylor and John Taylor had sons. These sons married CALNAN sisters on Kangaroo Island. Our immediate search is to determine whether James & John were brothers, cousins or unrelated. 1. Does anyone know the fate of Elizabeth Freer b. 1813 in Uppingham? 2. Is anyone aware of Taylor, HARVIN, OMOND or SKEA in the Uppingham District? 3. Has anyone studied the Free family from Uppingham - in particular the children (Elizabeth, John Thamas, George, Heber, William and Ann - all born between 1813 & 1825 in Uppingham) and grandchildren of William Freer and mary Ann Goodrich? Any information, insight or suggestions would be appreciated very much. Regards, Mike K
