red mail Hollis.
Does anyone know where the Hollis family came from? They came to Cottesmore in the 1790's or the 1800's. They have all stayed fairly local since then but I cannot find where they were before. William married Elizabeth Laxton both born in 1820 and were lodging with the Garfoots when first married. William's parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Bex from Rotherby, near Melton Mowbray,Leics- they were married in Melton. Thomas was born in Cottesmore in 1791 and he was a blacksmith and Elizabeth was a draper and she kept the shop in Cottesmore and later her daughter Harriet ran it. William and Elizabeth had several children, one was Samuel a butcher there and one was a builder said to have built Barnsdale Hall and several large houses. His two sons wanted to join him but he said he never got paid for most of these lovely houses and made the boys go into carpentry. They later started Hollis flooring in Leicester specialising in parquet floors.I think one had a second marriage to a Annie Ashby, My G Grandfather married Mary Tidd from Ashwell. Any help please!

red mail Confusion of Spouse
Can anyone solve this puzzle for me. John Barfield born c 1830 Oakham married an Eliza from Stamford, Lincs born c 1826 ( see 1851 & 1861 censuses). According to John Barfield married Eliza Lockwood Isitt in 1850 at Oakham Rutland. However the free BMD entry shows that John Barfield married Q2 1850 Oakham 15 1095 to 1 of 4, the only eliza being Eliza Stimpson. Meanwhile Q2 1850 Oakham 15 1105 records that Eliza Lockwood Isitt married 1 of 4 but no Barfield or even a John in sight. I have tried to find a connection between Isitt and Stimpson in case there had been a previous marriage but to no avail. According to famsearch Eliza Lockwood Isitt was born c 1826 Stamford. Also there is a Eliza Stimpson christened 3rd August 1828 in Stamford. Anyone throw any light on the subject? Who did John Barfield marry? Was Eliza Lockwood Isitt the same person as Eliza Stimpson Many thanks for any clarification.
