red mail Betty McKenzie/Mary McGregor
In the 1851 Scottish census my gg grandmother Mary McGregor is visiting Betty McKenzie in the parish of Applecross, Rosshire. Betty (69)(Widow) is the head of the household, born Contin Rosshire. Mary (35)(Seamstress) was also born Contin (parents Donald McGregor and Ann Grant). Living with Betty is her 27 year old son, an agricultural labourer (b.Applecross)and 12 year old granddaughter, Chirsty (b. Applecross). Betty is financially supported by her sons. Also visiting Betty on census night is Angus McDonald, a 15 year old scholar, also born Applecross. There are lots of visitors in different houses at the time of the census which suggests that an important event is about to, or has already taken place. Mary's sons, Duncan, John and Donald are left behind in Lochcarron and the other son William (my g grandfather) is visiting grandparents in Conan Village, Rosshire. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with information on any people mentioned or possibly on an important event that was happening in Applecross around the time of the 1851 Census. Thank you
