Craven
My Craven ancestors came to the Newark area from Diseworth in Leicestershire before 1812. George Craven m Sarah Gee at Newark and they had 5 children: Sarah, George, Henry, Mary Ann and Robert. Young Sarah married 3 times (her last husband was a Mr Hind); young George left the district and I believe he went to Manchester; Henry (my x3 g/grandfather) m Harriet Fletcher then Elizabeth Rees. He died aged about 33 in 1850. Mary Ann m Mr Harvey and Robert died c1866 aged about 40. The family were bakers/corn merchants/millers. Does anyone know anything about them or the Gee family please? Thanks.
William Henry Hossingbrook SHAW
My Grandmother's brother is buried in Newark, he died there in 1955. He had married in Canada but I don't know his wife's maiden name. She is believed to have been originally from the Newark area. I noticed there is a third burial in the grave, apart from him and his wife so I am wondering if this could give a clue to her maiden name. The third burial is William Henry Hossingbrook SHAW but he was an infant who must have died soon after birth I don't know his parents' names. It is such an unusual name that I wondered if anyone had come across it?

red mail Newark & Balderton war memorial Photo project
The 4th of August is the 100th aniversary of the declaration of war by Great Britain on Germany. We have about 500 names on these 2 memorials, But that is all they are just names. I think it would be fantastic to put Faces to these names. Names on a memorial mean very little to the younger generation but if we could put faces to these names and find a place to display them then they will always be rememberd. It will be a mammoth task to achive this but with your support I believe it can be done. We have just over 3 years to achive this and find a permanent place to display them. A web site will be launched as soon as possible so that photo's and stories can be down loaded. So if you have any photo's of any one on the Newark or Balderton memorials then please contact me. Thanks Pete

red mail Lane family/builders/stonemasons
Thomas Lane born 1812 married to ann snell then ann marshall was the father of Cuthbert the last child for ann snell before she died Cuthbert was my great grandfather he and his father were builders with about 25 employees according to 1881 census. They lived in Carter Gate and the family owned several homes in Carter Gate one of which was no. 8 but I am having difficulty locating this building - it seems to be where the actual gate is but my father remembers going to his grandfathers home up a grand drive by carriage to a very large home I would love to know if it still exists? Another relation Henry Lane born 1835 son of Charles was a solicitor and his address given in the census was 8a Lombard Street Newark there is a solicitors there now but not sure if this is the right location as he was listed as Robin Hood family law and I have seen the Robin Hood hotel in this location which has apparently been replaced by a shopping centre. Would love to hear from any relations or if anyone has any information. Charles was my g.g. grandfather.
Sharp, Samuel, b. 1834
Samuel Sharp, born in Newark in 1854 was a great grand uncle. I have two problems with which I need help. The first concerns his wife, Frances Harriett.... I cannot find her family name. She clearly prefers the Harriett part of her name, since that is how she appears in 3 census returns - 1891, 1901 and 1911. In those returns she is recorded as born in 1853, and in two of them, born in Witton, Norfolk. There are two villages named Witton in Norfolk. One near North Walsham, and part of the Smallburgh Union, the other closer to Norwich, and part of the Blofeld Union. Interestingly, a Samuel Sharp had a marriage registered in Smallburgh in Q4 of 1878, and a Francis Edward Sharp died in North Walsham in 1972. Francis Edward was the name of one the twins born to Samuel and Harriett in 1879, and the one dying in North Walsham was the right age. The 1911 census is perhaps the most helpful. It was clearly completed by Francis, since his signature appears. Harriett is shown as born in 1853 in Witton, Norfolk, still a wife, not a widow, and married for 32 years - which would be correct at the time of the 1911 census in Q2. This therefore could be a confirmation that Samuel married in Smallburgh. But, what was Harriett's family Name? Harriett is shown as a wife in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns, but there is no sign of Samuel. Where was he in that period of time? 1871 shows him as a 'footman', whereas 1881 and 1891 shows him as a 'butler in domestic service'. To have achieved the 'rank' of butler by the age of 28 is an achievement in itself, so did Samuel go on to 'serve' in higher places, leaving Harriett at home to look after the children.
