red mail Martha FARMAN (1855-1938)
I am seeking information regarding my great-grandmother, Martha FARMAN (or FIRMIN). She was born in Great Witchingham in 1855 and grew up at the Green Man Inn in Sparham, before going into domestic service in Reepham. The first of her nine (illegitimate) children, Edith Martha, was born in Sparham in 1874; the next four - Robert, Alice, my grandfather Alfred, and Horace - were born in Gressenhall Workhouse, where Martha is described as an inmate in the 1881 and 1891 census returns before becoming the Matron's servant in 1892. By 1897 she had moved to Dereham, residing initially at 2 Becclesgate, then at 13 Alcocks Yard and later at 3 Baxter Row; her last four children - Elsie Maud, George, Lilian and Reginald - were born in Dereham, where she worked as a charwoman. She died in 1938 and is buried in an unmarked plot in Dereham Cemetery, where Horace, George, Lilian and Alice's son, Frederick George, are also buried. I wonder whether any of her other descendents still live in Dereham, and whether anyone might be able to identify the father(s) of her children? Thanks, David.
