red mail Mahala Morgan from Chepstow
I am looking for information on Mahala Morgan born in the 1790's Chepstow. Here is the little I know about Mahala. At some point she married Miles Thomson and I believe they had at least 8 children all born in Bristol. The children I have found are Thomas 1819, Julia 1820, Henry 1828, John 1829, Mary 1831, Elizabeth 1834, Amelia 1836 & Louisa 1838. It is possible her marriage to Miles Thomson was her 2nd marriage. Mahala's 1st marriage may have been to a Wilson as I have found a marriage for Mahala Wilson & Miles Thomson in 1818 Bristol. I do not have any proof concerning the marriage to a Wilson. Any assistance would be appreciated. regards Diane

Descendents of Florence Watkins
In 1918 Florence Watkins had a daughter, Dorothy Rachel, (father unknown) who was brought up in a children's home. In 1921 we believe Florence married George Maddox and they had a daughter, Evelyn. We think Evelyn married Patrick McCrudden and had two children, Edward and Angela in the 1940s. Other surnames that have come to light in our research are Hastings and Arthurs. If anyone can help us with more details we would be delighted to hear from them.
red mail Fletcher & Hodge
Hello All! Hope that someone out there can help me find so the children of a couple that I directly descend... The following info is the marriage of the couple that I descend: Location: Chepstow, Monmouthsire, Wales Marriage Date: 23 Mar 1818 Brides Name: HODGE Mary Condition: Spin Bride Residence: o t p Grooms Name: FLETCHER Joseph Condition: batch Groom Residence: o t p Licence or Banns: Banns Signature or Mark: He signs she marks Witness 1: The mark of Thos Lewis Witness 2: Orpheus Lewis This couple are one set of my 3 x great grandparents on my fathers side and as you can see from above they married 23 Mar 1818 in Chepstow, Monmouthsire, Wales... The problem that I have is that the first child I was able to trace was born on 9 May 1825 and baptised 17 Jul 1825 at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham (now Tyne and Wear)... Joseph Fletcher & Mary Hodge had a further 8 children in the same area. From their children's birth certificates I know that Joseph was a Mariner... On the 1841 census wife Mary appears at home with 6 of her 8 children... the eldest child born there Elizabeth Fletcher 1825 I was able to find on another census return as a domestic servant... the 8 child John Thomas Fletcher born 1826 would have been 15 yrs old in 1841.. I have been unable to find their son John Thomas Fletcher born 1826 on any of the 1841 census returns and I have also been unable to find his father Jospeh Fletcher the Mariner... if Joseph was the same age as his wife he would have been born c1797.... My first guess was that John Thomas aged 15 and father Joseph aged abt44 may have been on a fishing vessel yet I can not find them... I then looked at death records and I have been unable to find either of them... I also checked in case John Thomas died as an infant yet I have found no death record!.. According to the info on the 1851 census Mary is now recorded as a widow... I know that Joseph must have been still alive in 1840 as he is record on the baptism record of their last child Sophia Fletcher born 22nd Jun 1840... I have been traced the death records for Joseph Fletchers in the area between 1840 & 1851 and have only found one Joseph yet he was far too young to have been my Joseph... Do any of you know if their are lists or records of Mariners that have been lost at sea? Do any of you possibly directly descend John Thomas Fletcher born 1826 in Sunderland? Another part of my problem is that the first census we are able to search is the 1841 return, I do not know where Joseph Fletcher & wife Mary Hodge were from them getting married on 23 Mar 1818 in Chepstow, Monmouthsire, Wales.. to having their first child in Sunderland on 9 May 1825 followed by a further 7 children and the last being born on 22nd Jun 1840... I am assuming that in the 7yrs between their marriage date in 1818 and their daughter Elizabeth being born in 1825 in Sunderland that they had other children... but who are they and where were they born?? Do any of you have any thoughts or tips as to how I may be able to trace these other possible/probable children??.. Father Joseph Fletcher was a Mariner so I have no idea whether they moved around the coast on their way to Sunderland and even if he did in which direction... or did they take a more direct route across country.. I've tried searching all the usual sites for births/baptisms but the usual problem remains in that the mothers maiden name is not always recorded... Now to the final part of my puzzle Joseph Fletcher the Mariner... as I have so far been unable to find his death record I have no idea how old he was at death hence I have no idea when he was born... his wife Mary was born c1797 and they married in 1818 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales... sadly the marriage record only states that they were both of this parish when they married.... they may have lived there but where was he born?.. not in Chepstow that I have been able to find... there are quite a lot of Fletcher's in Gloucester... or was Joseph a Mariner that traveled down from Sunderland and docked in somewhere around that area of Wales when he met Mary Hodge... Any/all thoughts and tips would be kindly accepted as I have been trying to figure this out for almost 5 yrs now with no obvious luck.. Many Thanks!! James

Ellen COOPER
We are descendants of Ellen Cooper (2 Sep 1878) via her illegitimate daughter Mary Ann born in 1900. That daughter was placed with Dr.Barnardos c.1903 and we have records of Ellen in Newport Union Workhouse (Wooloston House) from c.1903 until 10th June, 1931 when she (and the other inmates) were moved to Regents House in Chepstow. Her death is recorded (GRO) in 1962 at Drybridge House, Monmouth. We are keen to find details of her life in the Workhouse and reasons for the apparent lack of any family contacts throughout her time in the various Workhouse institutions. Regards Greg
