Laing family of Newton 19th c - (Newton Village - Midlothian)
We are interested in the family of William Laing b circa 1727, who farmed at Edmonstone Mains and Craig'oer (Craigour / Craigover) farms during the 18th and 19th centuries. William Laing married Isabel Walker. The Laing family may have originated from Pittenweem in Fifeshire. Their son David b 2nd June 1761, went to Jamaica c1790s and married Mary Simpson who was also from a Scottish family but returned due to illness and died London 1800. They had several children including: 1) Mary Ann, who married a Dr Henry Reeder and went to USA. They had several children including William, David, John, and a daughter. See entry under Reeder, Sheffield. 2) Isabella, b c1794 and died London 9th May 1839 unmarried. 3) John, who was born Kingston Jamaica 1798 later living Montague Square London and Montpelier Road Brighton from 1855 where he died 1869. John was twice married; Firstly to Lydia Whiteford Bailey, (Whitefoord / Whitefoorde / Whiteford/e?) who died at Tunbridge Wells in 1836 and is buried at St Peter's Horton Bucks with their infant daughter Adelaide. They had another daughter Caroline Isabella who married Admiral Sir Joseph Nias and had several children but that family seems to have died out now. John married for a second time in 1866 to Marian Sarah Turrell but died before her and is also buried with his first wife Lydia at Horton. 4) Janet b1799 Jamaica who may have died young, and... 5) David (junior) b1800 London who became a well-known CofE clergyman being responsible for the building of Holy Trinity Church at Haverstock Hill London largely from his own funds. He married Mary Elizabeth West in 1824, (daughter of 'John West of Jamaica'. John West was later of 'Upper Harley Street London'. but that may have son of the Jamaica one) They appear to have adopted a child who died young and unmarried. William Laing had another son John, (brother to the David b1761), who had a coffee plantation known as Peter's Valley in St George's Parish Jamaica which had been purchased with a loan of £5000 from said brother David who apparently also owned Fair Mile Farm and Knip Hill Farm near Cobham in the county of Surrey at the time of his death in 1800. There are many memorials in Newton churchyard to the Laing family. One of the inscriptions tell us that William Laing had another son Robert who went to Wigan. The family were in the Newton area for several generations but seem to have moved away in the middle of the 19th century. We would like to hear from anyone who can add anything to the above.

red mail Philbin - (Rosewell - Midlothian)
Looking for any information about Philbins from this area. Working on my husband's family tree and his family came from Ireland in the 1800s and settled in Rosewell and Lasswade. Particularly interested in Martin Philbin married to Sarah McHale. He is my husband's great, great, great grandfather. He is recorded as Martin Philbin on every record except one where is he recorded as 'Bartholomew Filbin'. I think his daughter Catherine was born around 1842 and she married a Michael Rowley (not sure if that's exactly correct). Another daughter Mary was born around 1849 and she married James Cunningham in 1874 (though I haven't found a record of this yet. It's taken from info oh Mary's death cert). Martin and Sarah's son Anthony was born in Ireland circa 1853. Anthony married Mary Scott in 1873 and this is the line my husband is descended from. There may well be other siblings but I haven't managed to verify that yet. Anthony and Mary had at least 11 children - Martin, Patrick, Anthony, James, Thomas, Michael, Sarah, John, William, Mary and Helen. James, John and Helen all died as babies. Martin married Catherine McDonald in 1895. Have tried trawling the Irish records but have had very little success.
