My great grandfather James Murray Smithson cannot be found! He was born c 1835 in Edinburgh, father thought to be a William Smithson. He was a cabinet maker by trade and was in Manchester by the 1851 census. Family legend has it that he was born orlived in Portobello in his early life. Cannot find any trace of him in Scottish records, in fact no Smithsons can be found at all. His middle name of Murray could be a clue.
