red mail Patrick Walker, the covenanter
Does anyone have information about Patrick Walker the famous covenanter of Scotland? He may be from West Calder, East Lothian, but spent much of his adult years in Edinburgh. He went around gathering information on the life of martyrs of the "killing time." He himself was a prisoner for quite awhile, and was supposed to be banished to America. Fortunately, he escaped the ill fated ship. His books are still found in libraries in Scotland. His writings were influential and helpful to the authors, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. I am wonder if anyone knows who his children were, and the names of his first and second wife. Is anyone out there his descendant? His courage is a heritage to be valued. My Kennoway Walker, born 1734 in Edinburgh had, as some of his baptismal witnesses, a "Patrick Walker, indweller in Edinburgh, along with a Peter and James Walkers, town officers. We are trying to see who this Patrick Walker "indweller of Edinburgh" was, the covenanter or someone else?

red mail Dickson/Laurenson/Winsby/Thomson/Edinburgh/Orkney Islands
I am hoping to make contact with members of my family. My great Grandparents were William and Joanna (nee Laurenson) Dickson who were married in Barnet, London, on 16 June 1881. William was a bank accountant. They lived in Edinburgh where my Granfather, Adam Fleming Dickson was born (in the district of Cannongate) on 20 July 1884. He was baptised on 17 August 1884 at the Church of Restalrig. At the time of his birth the family lived at 10 Royal Park Terrace, Edinburgh. I know Adam had a brother, James and a sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) and there may have been other siblings. Adam married Winifred Wilhamina McCarthy Winsby (father Thomas Winsby and mother Catherine Thomson) from Scapa in the Orkney Islands. Winifred was one of nine siblings and had a brother Tom who went to Vancover Canada. Adam and Winifred had 6 children (3 of them died as infants, Alan and Arthur, twins b 1915 and Maurice b 1921). The surviving children were Norman, Kathleen and Irene. Adam and the surviving children emigrated to New Zealand about 80 years ago. (Winifred didn't actually settle here until the 40's, but made some trips out to 'visit' the family). When they were in Edinburgh I believe Adham worked at the Bank of Scotland - Winifred was an artist and may have possibly taught art at the Ediburgh Academy. At this time they lived in Princess Street (I think). I would be grateful to hear from anyone who knows, or has any connection to my family. Kind Regards Lynne

red mail Rutherford in Edinburgh - can you help?
Currently researching my mother's family, in particular the Rutherfords. My grandfather was William Wallace Rutherford, born 1920 in Hull. His father was Robert Henry Rutherford, born 1875 in Hull, married Florence Henrietta Govier 1919 in Hull. Robert Henry's father was William Rutherford, born 1846 in Edinburgh, apprenticed in 1864. The family story is that William abandoned his apprenticeship and was smugled out of Edinburgh to Glasgow where he boarded a ship to Hull. That is all the detail I know so far, but I'm working on it. His parents were William Rutherford and Sophia Probert? (spelling may be wrong there). Does any of this sound familiar? Can anyone help me add more details and find my Edinburgh roots?
