Alice Marion/Marian Vickers
I'm looking for my maternal great-grandmother, Alice Marion or Marian Vickers, who married Alexander Cruickshank Brown in Durban on 3rd July 1901. No record of her birth exists but we suspect she and an Alice Marian Vickers, born at 23 Cambridge Buildings, Westminster, in December 1879 may be one and the same. It is probable her family emigrated to South Africa in the 1880s. Her mother, also Alice Vickers, was born in Godstone, Surrey, ca. 1857 and Alice Marian had a brother, Sam, 6 years old at the time of the 1881 UK census. Interestingly, Alice Marian's mother is listed as a butler's wife but also as head of the household at 23 Cambridge Buildings. No husband is listed so this may have been a family in domestic service to gentry who had sailed for Natal with their butler, Vickers. Once settled there, Vickers could have telegraphed his own family to join them, possibly in or around Dundee, Natal, where Alice Marion Vickers is now buried. Alice Marion Vickers followed her husband all over Natal (apparently he was either a foreman or engineer who built bridges), bore a daughter, Natalie Mary Brown (1903-1987) and died of peritonitis in 1913. Natalie herself married Dr Comyn Duthie in Johannesburg in 1927 and they had three children: Ethne Mary Jean (my mother), Andrew Ewart and Alison Gillian. It's a long shot, but if anyone knows about the Vickers of Cambridge Buildings, please get in touch.
John Bell born Westminster 1846
John, son of Henry Bell and Charlotte Hude, born Westminster in 1846. He was the brother of my great grandmother Charlotte Bell and the only member of her family who I can't positively trace after 1861.There was a possible John Bell living in Westminster in 1871 with a wife Jane and daughters Letitia Jane and Jessie Amelia. A third daughter Louisa was born after this family moved out to West Ham in Essex. Could find no trace of a marriage and sent for Letitia's birth cert. which gave mothers name as Connor but could still find no trace of a marriage or a Jane Connor. His father Henry was a pianoforte maker so a marriage cert. would have been good confirmation. John & Louisa died between 1881/1891 and Letitia married a Thomas Stacey. John's grandmother was also called Letitia which makes me think this could be him but can find no information to confirm one way or the other. If any of this information means anything to someone I would be pleased to hear.

Hude,Fletcher
Denis Joseph Rener Hude (sometimes recorded as Joseph) c1766 and Letitia Fletcher c1760's were married at St.Martin in the Fields 17.10.1790 but I have no idea if either of them were actually born in London. Their children all baptised at St.Martin in the Fields were Letitia 1793(married John Reynolds 5.8.1838 St.Anne Soho), Dennis 1794, Sarah 1797 (married Thomas Peake 29.9.1821 St.Martin),Elizabeth 1799, Sophia 1802, Mary 1804, Charlotte 1807 (married Henry Bell 16.6.1833 St.Martin). Mary A.A. 1870, George William 1874, William (Willie)Andrew 1879 and Thomas 1882. Last trace of Mary was 1881 and George 1891 when he was living with his father and brother William. George Thomas was a french polisher living alone in Marylebone in 1901 and William was a hosiers asst. living with his aunt Eliza Swan(m.n.Price)and her daughter Alice in Shoreditch. red mail Holland
Please can anyone tell me more about my Grandfather, Henry George King Holland, born 13 Nov 1854 in Islington, died 19 February 1938 in Camberwell after living at 95, Glengarry Road, East Dulwich and buried in the Westminster City Hanwell Cemetery? He may have spent time in his illness at his daughter's home in Lewisham (Irene =Fred. Hawes, a Lewisham Councilor before and after WWII). The 1881 census tells us that, at the age of 26 he lived with his widowed mother Emily (nee Bowerman - b.1810 in Christchurch district, Surrey) and that he was a clerk to the Westminster Board of Guardians. The 1901 census places him and his wife Jane Annie (nee Franklin), a certified nurse as the "proprietor" of an orphanage at 1,2&3, Canterbury Parade, Westgate on Sea, Thanet. My father, Harold Cecil(5) and his brother Frederick George(6) were recorded there too. So was Jane's sister Emma Adeline (Addie) Franklin, also a cert. nurse (who kept pomeranian dogs in her attic room - according to father's stories). The list of names of the children at the orphanage amounted to almost 60 in all and they were all born in the City of Westminster. Henry and his family returned to Westminster where it was thought he became a registrar, certainly still an employee of the City Council. All my contacts have disappeared and I would be grateful for any information from anyone who knew the family. (Refer also to Islington and Covent Garden).
