red mail COWEN - Shoreditch/Hoxton/St.Botolph without Aldgate
My COWEN ancestors lived around the Shoreditch area from at least as early as the 1760s. Archibald COWEN and is wife Margaret (or possibly Mary) produced a son George COWEN in 1768 and another in 1766. George in turn married a Ann KINLOCH or KINLOCK at Shoreditch in 1798. One of their sons Frederick was my greatgreat-great-grandfather who was born in 1799. Frederick later travelled to Bretton West in Yorkshire where he worked as a house painter. He married a Rachel BECKWITH there in 1826 and they had children Mary Ann (born 1831), Frederick junior in 1833 and George William in 1838. Frederick and Rachel COWEN later lived in Sheffield during part of the 1840s (and maybe as early as 1838 or 1839) after which they settled in Hackney, London. Does anyone have any details about my COWEN family? I would love to locate photos but I know this is very unlikely! Any stories would be great too. For example what was the connection with Yorkshire in the first place? I also believe that the COWENs were orinally Scottish so what drew Archibald to London? Was it for work? What did he do for a living? Any information at all would be absolutely wonderful. Thanking you in anticipation. Cheers, Rob.

Would very much enjoy hearing from any descendants of John SAGE (b. abt. 1843, Twerton or Bath, Somerset) and Ann BAY (b. abt. 1842, Pentonville, Middlesex). The couple reared a family in the Shoreditch area beginning in the 1860’s. John was a basket maker and businessman by trade. Children included Caroline, Albert Edward, Augusta Eliza (went by Eliza all her life), Emma Rebecca, Ada Florence and possibly William. Caroline and Eliza are known to have immigrated to Dover, Kansas, USA in the 1880’s. Albert Edward is known to have immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Ada Florence is known to have immigrated to New Zealand by way of South Africa, eventually marrying Arthur Moran English. The fates of Emma Rebecca and William, however, remain a complete mystery. John and Ann appear to have lived in New Jersey, USA for a period of time, but are thought to have later returned to England. Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
