red mail Notable Vaughan Family
I live near the site of the last known house owned by a notable Vaughan family. The last member of this branch of the family is buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's in Llan Ffestiniog. The house was situated on the land now known as Maes Y Plas, Manod, Blaenau Ffestiniog. It was always known as Miss Vaughan's House. Beautifull south facing 2 storey house which stood in it's own grounds of 2 acres. It had 4 bedrooms, dinning room, morning room, cold store room which had a slate slab to keep food cold, kitchen, pantry, scullery and servants quarters above the kitchen. I used (to my shame) play in the house before it was demolished and will always remember it's beauty with the sun shining through the copper beach leaves of the trees, the red rhododendron bushes and cherry blossoms growing on the 3 trees in the borders of the grassy lawn at the side of the house. The family had an odd feature or 2 added to the house namely a carved gravestone erected on the wall in the drawing room next to the fire grate and a few graves found in the cellar which could only be accessed from an outside door on the east side of the house facing the main road. Has anyone any knowledge or any facts about the Vaughan family which lived there? The family have always facinated me.
