red mail What could have happened to Margaret Mills? - (Walkden - Lancashire)
I am trying to find out what could possibly have happened to a great grandma of mine named Margaret Mills. I have her on the 1881 census living in Walkden, Lancashire but then I cannot find her on the 1891, 1901 or 1911 census's. From this you would assume she died, however I cannot find a death record for her or any burial record in local cemeteries. This has puzzled me for months, I have wondered whether she went to a workhouse because I know they were very poor but she was married with 6 children at the time, the family were living with her brother and on the 1891 census her husband is still living there with the kids. Did people get sent away to a workhouse if they were married with children, leaving the family at home? I have also wondered if she remarried but I'm not sure if that sort of thing happened at the time if she was married with children and the kids were with the dad? If anyone has any idea what may have happened to her it would be really appreciated. Thanks

red mail Sherridan.Bridget Teresa. - (West Didsbury - Lancashire)
I am looking for my Grandmas family, of the above name. We think that she was born in the West Didsbury area, and that her parents names could have been John and Mary. We are almost certain that she had four brothers named Tom, Matt, Jimmy and John, and that she may have had a sister, also called Mary. She talked occasionally of an orphanage or school in Wilmslow, run by Nuns who were cruel. Her brother Matt married a lady named Margaret, and her brother John had two children named Iris and Warren. Grandma died last year and we would like to know about her family.

red mail THOMAS HALLAM 1843 - (West Gorton - Lancashire)
Further to my entry of May 07. I have now got Thomas's marriage to certificate to HANNAH HUDSON. However, at this point in time he was named Thomas ALLEN, a fireman. His father was named Thomas ALLEN also, a porter. Thomas and Hannah were married at the Cath & Parish Church in Manchester in Aug 1864. Her father is William Hudson, a shoemaker. I have all the census records for him and his family. However, it appears that at the time of birth of their son (John William) in 1865 in Ardwick, Thomas (1854) is now named HALLAM and working as an engine driver. This also corresponds to the name on his wedding to Sarah HUDSON in 1869 were he is stated to be a widower and an engine driver. This 2nd marriage took place in October 1869 at the parish church of St. MArk in Gorton. Her father is then given to be James HUDSON, a butcher. I have many records for his family also. However, it is at this point that John HALLAM the coachman comes into the picture as Thomas's father. Is there anyone out there who may be able to help with this change of name mystery. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find a mother's name to help with marriages to either husband.
