red mail Wainwrights/Tongues early 1900s
I am trying to find anyone who might be connected to a Mary Alice Wainwright (nee Tongue) who was referred to in newspaper articles in 1904 after she was accused of trying to drown herself and two of her children (Susan, aged 11 and Nora, aged nine) in the River Irk at Spring Vale, Middleton, Manchester. The story was passed down my family and the mother was supposed to be related to us, however, I have looked at marriage records for Mary Alice and her children and there are no surnames which are familiar from my tree. I realise she could have been a close friend who was referred to as an aunty, but Mary Alice and her daughters straddle my Middleton ancestors in age so I can't see any likely friendships. Older members of my family believe Mary Alice was a relative of either my great aunt, Elizabeth Norman (nee Woodward) or my half-great aunt Emily Woodward (nee Roscoe). Joanne
I am attempting to find information regarding my paternal grandfather FRED DIXON. I know he joined the Liverpool Regiment as a Special Reserve in 1910. I also know he was despatched to France in 1915 and subsequently wounded, losing his left eye in 1917. He was returned home and spent his convalscence somewhere in the North East. There he met and married my grandmother Ethel. He was granted a military pension but was unfortunately confused with a Fred Dyson. I would be very grateful for any information regarding him.
I am interested in any information relating to an Edward and Ellen Thomas who probably moved from North Wales to Middleton around 1805. They had two children christened at St Leonard's in Middleton: John (1806) and Edward (1808). They later moved to Oldham and had two children christened at St Peter's: Mary (1810) and Daniel (1812). Edward was a farmer in Chadderton at the time of the baptisms in Middleton and a labourer in Oldham. According to the 1851 census, Ellen was b. 1771 in Wrexham.
