red mail Margaret (Maggie) SLATER
Hello, I am the great granddaughter of Peter Slater and Elizabeth Duffy who lived in North Manchester. They are shown in the 1881 census with two children: William (b. 1870c) and Maggie (b. 1874c). My grandmother was not shown on that census as she was born in the mid-eighties. I am working with the grandson of William on that side of my family history and we have two seemingly insurmountable problems. One is that we can find no identifiable trace of Maggie (Margaret) after she appeared as a witness at William's wedding in the mid1890s. If there are any of her descendants out there who can fill in the gaps in our information, we would be really grateful. The second is that Peter and Elizabeth only married in 1880, after the death of Peter's mother Ann, who was a widow at the time. We would like to know more about this, although do not expect at this stage to discover the parentage of these two children, although we do know about their grandparents, on both sides, if either Peter or Elizabeth was an actual parent. We would love to hear from descendants of Margaret, if there is anyone out there, or indeed anyone related to this family. Look forward to a contact. - Pauline

I am trying to help out a Stead from Canada and would appreciate any help with any information on the following. Thomas Davies Stead was born in Manchester in the first quarter of 1871. He was at times, a machine fitter, bricklayer’s labourer and plasterers labourer.Thomas D Stead married Ellen Burnett (nee Gregory) in 1921. Thomas and Ellen had two daughters, Ellen Stead, born Prestwich Manchester in1922, and Margaret Stead, born 1923. Ellen married Carl Baker and emigrated to Canada after WW2 where she had two sons. Margaret married and was believed to have possibly moved to Wales. As yet, I can find no record of Douglas marrying. Ruth married James Norris. There were two children called: Mary Norris, born 1883 and James Norris, born c 1885. Thomas D Stead's parents were Thomas Stead (born about 1835 Salford, Manchester), coroner’s clerk, and Ann Stead (nee Davies). Thomas had earlier been a clerk in a newspaper office.Thomas and Ann were married 1855 in Manchester. Thomas Stead died in1897 in Manchester. red mail Manchester Newspapers lookup please
Hi, I wonder if someone has access to the Manchester Newspaper Archive. I need someone to look up newspapers in 1838/1839, the best bet would probably be the Manchester and Salford Advertiser 1825-1848, although there are others. What I'm looking for is a report on the trial of Edwin Buckley in Lancashire Quarter Sessions, Salford. He was first tried in January 1838, prosecuted by Ann Standing, and again twice in May 1839 prosecuted by Thomas Chapman and Joseph Bavis (I think). In both of these cases he had an accomplice, Joseph Collinge. One of these trials was on 27 May 1839 where he was prosecuted for shoplifting and sentenced to 7yrs transportation to Australia. I am trying to find clues to his birth, he was transported in 1840, so he won't be in the 1841 census. He said on his daughter’s birth record that he was born in Oldham, but so far I haven't been able to find him there. I hope someone can help. Thank You, Faye
