red mail SHEA or SHEE
The SHEA family were living in Manchester in 1841. The address is written as Hunt Bk or Hurt Bk or Hart Bk - difficult to be sure. Bk probably means Back. Can anyone enlighten me? The family had all been born in Ireland as had most of their neighbours. The head was Margaret SHEA 40. There were then Mary, 25, Patrick 20, Daniel 15 and Edward 10. There was also Daniel and Margaret Deasy and there son, and James Kelly and his daughter. 10 years later, in 1851, the family were all in Hull at Popples Row with various new in-laws. I would welcome any information about this family.
red mail GOODMAN
Charles GOODMAN was born in Manchester in about 1860. His father was Joseph GOODMAN. His first marriage was to Eleanor Lytton HAND at Llandudno in 1882. On the certificate his father is described as a Gentleman. Charles is described as "A gent" or "Agent" - difficult to tell. His son, Hubert GOODMAN, was born in Southport in 1884. Charles became a dentist and in the late 19th century lived in Northampton. Eleanor died in in 1886 and Charles married again in 1909 to Emily Ethel DAVIES in Portsmouth. He then lived and practised dentistry in Portsmouth until his death. I have hit a brick wall with Charles's earlier life and details of his parents. Any help would be appreciated.
Brothers: James & David Nuttall
I'm having trouble identifying James and David's mother. James is my 2x grandfather. I know their father was called John. He married his 2nd wife in 1847, at which point he was living in Chorlton on Medlock and working as a labourer. In 1861, John lived in Collyhurst and in 1871, when he died age 64, he lived at High Burton Street Manchester. By 1861, he was working as a watchman. James (my 2x grandfather) was born around 1839/1840 - probably in Manchester but, according to one census entry, in Levenshulme. Based on the only census entry I have for David, he was born 1841/42. On the 1861 census, both James and David are living at home and working as dyers but, by the time he married in the late 1860s, James was working as a carter or lurryman. I can't find James or David - or their dad - on either the 1841 or 1851 censuses. Does anyone have any information about them or this family? I can't get any further with this branch of my family unless I can identify the brothers' mother. Thanks
John Nuttall - watchman - died 1871
John married, as his 2nd wife, Agnes Batty at Manchester Cathedral in 1847. At the time he worked as a labourer and lived at Crossley Street Chorlton on Medlock. Agnes died in 1864 while they were living at Hamilton Street Collyhurst and is buried at Manchester General Cemetery. John died at home in High Burton Street Manchester in 1871 and is also buried at Manchester General. I've not found them on the 1851 census (probably unsurprising as many census records for the Manchester area are water damaged) but from 1861, John's described as a watchman. According to the censuses, John and Agnes had 5 children: ABIGAIL born Chorlton on Medlock 1849, HENRY born 1851/52, MARY JANE born 1853/55, MARGARET ANN born 1857/58 and JOSEPH born 1861. On the 1871 census, Abigail is acting as the family's housekeeper, the other girls are weavers, Henry is a screw maker and Joseph is still at school. But I've no information on any of John and Agnes's children after that. Is anyone researching this line or has come across them? Does anyone have any information about John and Agnes's children? Thanks

red mail Smedley, Rev. Joseph B., Mary Ann Ratcliff
I am searching for early information about my G-G-Grandfather, the Rev, Joseph B. Smedley b 1792 in Derbyshire*, d 1877 in Mansfield, Arkansas. The initial 'B' is probably Bucknell. It appears in two following generations. *Family accounts also indicate possibility of his birth in Notthingham, Milnethorpe, Westmoreland, Sheffield, Melbourne, or Manchester. His parents are unknown, therefore, locating birth/baptism records is going to be difficult. He was married to Mary Ann Ratcliff, b. 30 April 1799, Manchester, m. 26 Dec 1820, St Johns Church, Manchester, his residence listed as Milnthorpe on the document. Mary Ann died 6 July 1836 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Joseph's occupation on the marriage license was listed as Minister of the Gospel. He graduated in 1818 from Mr. Bogue's Missionary Academy (Gosport Academy); and ordained Sept 18, 1818, Stepney Chapel. He preached at Congregational churches in Milnthorpe 1818-1822. He sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia, PA, aboard the Ship "Arab" in 1829. His occupation on the ship's record listed "dyer". (Possibly he worked in a mill in the Derbyshire area?) Mary Ann and six children joined him in Philadelphia two months later. Rev. Joseph B. Smedley had a distinguished career in the US. He was hired in 1835 by the US Government and served with the Baptist Mission Board as a teacher and missionary in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. From 1829 until his death in 1877 at age 85, his activities were well-documented with publications, news articles, letters from two presidents, and records in the Oklahoma Archives. He was postumously inducted into the Oklahoma Baptist Hall of Fame in 1992. His wife, Mary Ann Ratcliff, was the daughter of John Ratcliff and Mary Jeffries. John Ratcliff was said to have been a diplomat to Holland. Any information you may have about Rev. Joseph B. Smedley's parents, date of birth, siblings, or information about Mary Ann Ratcliff's family will be greatly appreciated. I will gladly share information. Thank you, Arlena

red mail Thomas BROWNBILL=Sarah LANCASTER wed in 1817
Posted 28Sep2009 : The marriage was celebrated 6th April 1817 in Manchester Cathedral (IGI batch M005465) between Thomas BROWNBILL and Sarah LANCASTER. We think that Sarah LANCASTER was born in Salford before 1800 (perhaps born 1792?), and she died after the 1861 census. A Thomas BROWNBILL was baptised in this same cathedral 25 May 1794 (IGI batch C005467), son of William & Margaret BROWNBILL who we assume were born before 1778. But Thomas BROWNBILL might have been linked with another Thomas Brownbill (born before 1780), brick-maker at 14 White Cross Bank, Salford (mentioned in the 1800 edition of the Manchester & Salford Directory). Other brick-makers bearing the name Brownbill in Manchester were Joseph (born before 1835) and Alfred (a son of above mentioned Sarah and Thomas Brownbill). Sarah & Thomas had nine children : Oliver 1819, William 1826, Margaret 1827, Emma ca1830, Louisa ca1831, Thomas ca 1837, Alfred ca 1838, Angelina ca 1839, and James Henry ca 1842. If anyone has fuller details of the ascendance and/or descendance of these Brownbills I would be pleased to hear from them and share what I know already. Oliver was my great-grandfather. Regards, Ken

red mail William Frost 1858-1905 Im. to Chicago IL USA
I am looking for my gg grandfather William Frost who was born in Manchester, England about 1858. On the 1900 US Census it shows that he immigrated to the United States in 1860. He would have been 2 yrs old so he would have had to come with someone. I am assuming his parents but I have no names of any family prior to him getting married to my gg grandmother on Mary Ryan. They were married In Chicago at St. Gabriel's Church on Dec 2, 1888. That is the earliest I can place him. All other information is the information we took from the 1900 census, Chicago Directories, marriage License and Death cert. His death certificate states he lived in Chicago for 40 years at the time of his death and he was 46 years old. So if he was 2 when they came to the United States, he would have lived in another state or states before coming to Chicago, Illinois when he was 6 yrs old. Mary and He had a total of 6 children, Nora Frost 1889, William Joseph Frost Born 1892, Jeremiah Frost born 1893, Alice Frost born 1883 but died at 9 months old, Baby Frost died Dec 17, 1895 and Charlotte Frost born 1899. He died in 1905. He also may have been Protestant but married a catholic and possibly had a brother or family member named Harry Frost if any of this sounds familiar please contact me
