Alice Skillicorn was born in Liverpool in April 1855.Parents James and Eliza (nee Kinley). 0n 7.7.1873 she married James Wm. Nichols, he was 39 she was 18. Oral History says he was a sailor with connections to Brooklyn USA where a relative was a Church Minister. They were married at St.Thomas Church, Toxteth Park, Liverpool. On 1881 Census Alice is living in Liverpool with her parents, status married with a 5yr old son. The story told in the family is that James Wm Nichols died during a sea voyage and details of his death were forwarded to relatives in Brooklyn. No one in our family knows the cause of death or has seen a death certificate. 0n 28.10.1883 Alice married her cousin Lee Kewley, he came from Snaefell, Isle of Man. They were married at Holy Trinity Church,Toxteth Park, Liverpool. 0n the certificate Alice gives her maiden name and says she is a spinster. I have both marriage certificates. I have always thought that there is a mystery here. Why did Alice not mention her first marriage when she married a second time? Is it possible that James Wm Nichols just didn't come back from the sea voyage because he had something to hide, could he already have been married when he married Alice, after all there was 21 years difference in their ages. If the story is true why did she never mention being contacted by his American relatives, surely they must have tried to get in touch. I don't know how to proceeed with this, has anyone any knowledge of this story, or can offer advice??

red mail Caunce
I am trying to trace my mother's grandmother's family. I think JE Caunce (died 10 Sept 1916 in France WW1)may be my grandmother's brother, born in 1899. Her name was Elizabeth Caunce (b.1900). Her sister's name was Isabella May, but called herself Constance. My mother called her Ducky. If the JE connection is correct, their parents live in Aigburth (WW1 commonwealth graves site), not far from where they lived in Northbrook Street/ granby? St and before moving to Rutland Ave in Sefton Park area. The grandmother was known as Margaret Caunce her husband was James)but her real name was Marguerite (she was of French & Scottish origin) and she had a sister, possibly Isabella May (surname Moody?), known as Lizzie, who supported the wholly female family with her musical ability, playing (in/at) the philharmonic and doing dancing demonstrations WW2. She seems to have been a bit avant-garde for the period. I don't know where James Caunce came from.
