red mail ARMER, Charles Albert born 1888
Can anyone help please? My grandfather, CHARLES ALBERT ARMER was born in North Blackburn in 1888, and was registered as Charles Albert Armer, and his mother's name as Armer. He was illegitimate, neither his father, nor his mother's name are known. The only history I have is that his father had a brother, who later emigrated to Canada, or the US. There is also a family story that someone close was a music conductor for a major orchestra, could be BBC, but I don't know if this person was his father, or someone else in the family. At the age of just 3 years old he was shown in the 1901 census as a boarder living in Burton-in-Lonsdale, West Yorkshire, with a John and Margaret Fletcher, and their family. I have been unable to find his mother's name, or any other relative. I cannot trace anything about him, and don't know why he was taken to Burton-in-Lonsdale from Blackburn. I'm told that his mother could have been Scottish?, but I have no proof of this. He remained in Burton-in-Lonsdale for almost all of his life, marrying ANNIE SAUL. In the 1911 census he was still living with the same Fletcher family, in Duke St., Burton-in-Lonsdale, and working as a silk picker.

red mail Elizabeth Holmes b
My GG Grandmother Elizabeth Holmes b abt 1827 in Blackburn Lancashire married William Davis (unsure where.)There is no trace of a marriage of William Davis to Elizabeth Holmes in the Birmingham registers. So they could have been married elsewhere or it could have been Elizabeth's second marriage to William Davis. Her maiden name may be different. They appear on 1851 census living in Birmingham with daughter Eliza. They later had more children - Sarah, Samuel and William. I have a copy of Samuel's birth certificate and it has his mother's name as 'formerley Holmes' Does this suggest it wasn't her maiden name?? Any help would be appreciated.
