My late mother had a very good friend called Ethel Ghilks.They were friends from school days,with Ethel writing in my mothers autograph book.I think Ethel passed away around 1970.I think she lived in Hutton Avenue near Beaufort Road.If Ethel has any family I would love to get in touch to see if they could tell me which school my mother went to.

In 1927 my mother went to live with a family called Riley in Boyds Bulding Gorsey Lane Ashton under Lyne,she was aged 14.Also at this address was a boy named Charlie Riley who had also been taken in by this family. Does any one know of this man who may still be alive today.I would love to know what happened to him.An elderly genleman who knew him when they were young said he was very kind and always smiling. They went to the cinema in Ashton to see a silent western starring Tom Mix.Please can anyone help me.

Both families living in Ashton-Under-Lyne on 1861 census. Hydes in Grosvenor St, Bradburys inVictoria St. John Bradbury was a grocer. His wife was Sarah (maiden name?) Children Mary,Amos & Jabez-all unmarried in their 20's. The Hydes were John & Margaret (Marland) They had a number of children including Mark, Elizabeth (b.1837) John (who later married Emma Schofield and emigrated to New Zealand as did Elizabeth) Some of each family worked in the cotton mills. The Bradbury family were all listed as being born in Dukinfield,Cheshire. Jabez also emigrated to New Zealand two years after Elizabeth Hyde and they married there in 1865. Any information at all appreciated!

Does anyone have knowledge of a linoleum factory in the Ashton or Dukinfield area? I'm trying to trace the movements of my grandfather (John BLYTH (1871-1947) who went there from Kirkcaldy in 1898/99 until 1901. The factory could have been bought by Barry, Ostlere & Shepherd Ltd or by Michael Nairn Ltd. Any help, however small, would be appreciated.

Seeking info about my late grandfather's brothers who are believed to have emigrated to Canada or USA. My grandfather was EDWARD COLMAN (born Ashton c1899). He had an elder sister MARGARET COLMAN (born Radcliffe c1898 and two younger brothers, MALACHI COLMAN (born Ashton c1900) and MARTIN COLMAN (born Ashton 1902). I would appreciate any info at all about any of these four. Their irish born father (also Martin Colman), was a police constable in Lancs, their mother ELIZABETH HANNAH nee PARKINGTON, died in 1902 just after Martin was born. Martin married again in 1908 to Emily Ashworth, info about her also gladly received. Edward married Maggie Roscoe; they had Edward, Agnes, Winnie, Margaret, Ronald, and my father Bernard.

Henry Marland b. 11 Jan 1817, son of Caleb Marland 1786 and Martha Turner, married Prudence Betts b.20 May 1820, father John Joseph Betts an early fighter for the rights of workers in the mills and a Chartist, and mother Ann Norbury, in Bollington, Cheshire father Rodger Norbury. Three other siblings for Prudence Betts - Hannibal Betts, Patience Vesta Betts and John Joseph Betts jnr. who all lived in Ashton u Lyne or Manchester. Henry Marland and Prudence Betts had five children, (1) Eliza Marland born 1844 who died aged two, (2) John Henry Marland b. 2 Jan 1848 - John H is a mystery to us but became a bookeeper by 1871, (3) Andrew Marland b.26 Aug 1849 in Ashton under Lyne, who married Emma Julia Paling (who had changed her name to Emma Julia Stenton Paling Browne), (4) Arthur Marland b. 13 May 1863 Ashton, who married Mary Ellen Swindells - dau of Harry Hammond Swindells (hanged for murder in 1884 at Strangeways prison after marrying a second time), and Ann Chadwick, who died early; Arthur Marland and Mary Ellen had two daughters and two sons, one of whom died in WW1, and (5) William Betts Marland b. 26 Jul 1854 who married Hannah Maria Chadwick, half sister of Arthur Marland's mother in law Ann!!!; the latter pair had sons Hugh Marland 1885 (who ran a newsagents in A U L), and Harry Betts Marland 1888. Harry Betts Marland, born in Ashton was on the "Baltic", destination New York, on Dec 9th 1911 'seeking employment' but returned shortly thereafter and died in A U L. The children of Henry and Prudence Marland are recorded in family bible. Andrew (my ancestor) and Arthur are available with descendants since joining! William Betts Marland died in 1 Feb 1933. Maria Smith m William Margeson 1889 had 10 children: Thomas Harry;James William;May; Elizabeth; Alice; Richard Edmund;George; Alice Freda;Hector and Gladys Freda.Elizabeth Ann Smith married John Morgan, fish dealer and later William Hulme. They emigrated to US @ 1894.

Michael Rochford married Elizabeth McCabe in 1869 in Ashton under Lyne area. Michael's father was possibly Garratt Rochford and his mother was Catherine Sullivan both from Wexford, Ireland. Following the death of his parents in Ireland, Michael moved to Staleybridge to live with his mother's sister Esther Sullivan. Mary had 2 siblings that are known: Margaret and James. The parents of Josephare Benjamin and Betty Gardiner. The spelling of the last name may be Gardner or Gardener. Betty WINTERBOTTOM married Ralph BRADBURY October 14 1839 in P.Ch. Ashton Under Lyne, Barton. From then on she called herself Elizabeth. Her father John was a collier. Witnesses were Thomas Grimshaw and William Armitage who I hope were not just clerks of the church. Have been unable to establish any more links previous to marriage.
