My John Lomas moved to Ashton with his family from Tintwistle around 1845. He and his wife Hannah(maiden name unknown) had 7 children, two of them, William and James(my gt g'father) are shown on a census to be professors of music. Can anyone tell me how they aquired thses titles? Did they have to pass exams? They appeared to make a decent living as what I remember myself of the houses they had were quite good. red mail GARSIDE Enoch
Further to my original request for information on no.20 Blandford Street, as a result of obtaining the booklet Victorian Ashton and also an old map predating the online 1840's map, I now think that the farm was a tenancy and that the land was owned by the Lords of the Manor. When they decided to start building new houses in the late 18th century, to cope with the huge influx of workers seeking work in the cotton industry, ownership of the land would obviously have made it easy to build a street wherever they wished. On the old map which I have, the building work had not yet reached what was to be Blandford Street and it does seem to show a small farm. I have also discovered that the factory next door which I remember as a girl, was once a Waste Business (or part of it was) and may well have had a connection with Thomas Hargreaves, a Waste Dealer from Yorkshire, who married my grandfather's Aunt Sarah (nee Garside). Any information on any of the above would still be welcome.

red mail number 20 Blandford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne
Can anyone provide any information on number 20 Blandford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. My grandfather and his brother carried on a Carrier business from there, in the 1920's/30's I believe, with stables for carthorses at the back of the property. I was born at the house in the mid 1930's and the horses were still there. I have been told that locally at that time people referred to it as "the farm", but I remember it as a fairly solid house, with a yard and stables at the back but on one side was a factory and on the other side a small engineering business which had access to Blandford Street and Dean Street. I would like to know what no. 20 started off as, and when. My great, great grandfather was living there (also owning a Carrier business)according to the 1891 Census, but the 1881 Census, shows him living at no.18. An old map which I have examined shows that Blandford Street was already in existence in the 1840's. Any information at all, on any of the houses, or street numbering, for that top section of Blandford Street, i.e. nearest to Oldham Road, would be most welcome. By the start of the Second War, my grandparents were running the Beaver Inn on Oldham Road. Any information on this property and the war years would also be of interest to me. I very much regret my lack of interest all those years ago, when information would have been so easy to obtain.
red mail Lawton, Slater
My maternal grandparents James Lawton and Elizabeth Slater were married at St. Peter's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne, on 4th June 1898. I am interested in finding out more about both sets of great grandparents. In the 1891 Census, Samuel Lawton is shown as aged 45, with a wife Mary aged 44. They were living at 85 Ashmoor Street, Preston but in 1881, they were living at 53 Read Street, Stockport. The eldest son (also Samuel)was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, as was his father, but Mary was born in Stalybridge. The 2nd and 3rd sons, James and Alfred, and youngest child Ada were all born in Stockport and the 4th son Arthur was born in Reddish. All were employed then, or later, in Cotton Mills. I am particularly interested in more information on James, who was also a Sergeant in The Territorials and lost his life in the first World War, as did his eldest son Percy. In the same census, my grandmother's father Edward Slater is shown as aged 40, with a wife Hannah aged 39. They lived at 66 Church Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. They and their four daughters - Elizabeth, Clara, Emma and Ada were all born in Ashton. There was a fifth daughter whose name I am unsure of. I was born in 1934 and knew Auntie Clara my grandmother's sister, but remember no one else except an Auntie Ada, who could have come from either side of the family. Would welcome any information, particularly the maiden names of both great grandmothers.
