red mail DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF WALLACES CAVE AT CLELAND?
Hi there, I live locally in Lanarkshire and really want to find out more about this cave. Basically within the cliff face under which the old House of Cleland stood (Now Dalziel Golf Club on site), there was a large cave able to hold about 50 people. I have read dozens of 18th/19th/early 20th century short descriptions of it. I have also read the RCAHMS record stating that by the 1950's it had been reduced by rock falls to its back wall. In 2008 I visited it with friends only to find nothing at all... no trace! What I want to know is if anybody knows of, or has taken any photos of the cave whilst it was still fully or partially intact? I would like to know if anybody has any memories of the cave? ever visited it, or can give a description of it. It was situated on the north bank of the South Calder Water, underneath Cleland Estate, and opposite the cliff of Ravenscraig on the southern bank. To those in Wishaw it would count as in the gorge beyond the site of the Steelworks. Can anybody help me out here? Many thanks
