The MCALPINE family in Lanarkshire, Dumbartonshire and Stirlingshire
I am seeking more information about the ancestors of Thomas MCALPINE who was born around 1805 in Shotts, Lanarkshire. He was probably the son of David and Helen (nee NISH/NEISH) who had several other children between 1803-1811 in Airth, Stirlingshire, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, and Denny, Stirlingshire including Clementina MCALPINE (1803) and Matthew Gardner MCALPINE (1811). Thomas, a collier is known to have married and the IGI indicates he had a number of children baptised at Denny, Stirlingshire, with the mother's name given as Catherine ROBERTSON from 1826-1847 - ie Jean in 1826, and Helen in 1828, then a big gap to Thomas in 1842, William in 1844, and the last being James in 1847. However, in searching for that marriage the only possibility is one Christian ROBERTSON in 1825 who the PR states married a Thomas MCALPIN, Collier of Hagg at Denny. Absolutely all the details fit except her first name! There is strong evidence to suppose this must be the same woman, though why she changed her name is not known. The 1841 census lists Thomas, Catherine and daughter Helen at Haggs, together with a daughter Clementina and a son David. Confusingly again the IGI shows their likely parents as being David and Helen who had married in 1837! Could these two children have been adopted by Thomas and Catherine? On the other hand they could indeed be Thomas and Catherine's children as there is a gap for that period when Catherine had no known children. Very strange. In the 1851 census Clementine and David are still in Thomas' household, now living at Skinflatts, Bothkennar in Stirlingshire and described as his children. Thomas died some time between 1851-1854 but it is believed that his wife lived into her 70s. Thomas' son, another Thomas (b 1842 Haggs) lived variously at Denny and Skinflatts, and married Margaret NICOL in 1867 at Bothkennar. He lived for a time in Glasgow, then at Kirkintilloch, and latterly in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, where he is thought to have died sometime between 1901-1909. One of Thomas' sons, William MCALPINE (1880), married Mary RALSTON (1885) in 1909 at Blythswood, Glasgow. Do any of these names ring a bell? I would love to learn more.
