red mail Crozier adoption Newcastle
I have only recently found out there were people with the surname Crozier in Leadhills and wonder if any can link with the information below of a Stewart (Leadhills descent) who was orphaned and taken in by a Crozier family in Newcastle. James Stewart from Ford Mill was orphaned when his father died in a drowning accident in Newcastle and was taken in by a Crozier family who's surname he added to his own and became James Stewart Crozier (b.1902) He married Mary Allan and they had one known child Joyce (married a MacMahon) in Newcastle in 1930. She had 3 children, Gerald Kevin MacMahon b.1955, Christopher John MacMahon b.1957, Fiona Jane MacMahon b.1961. James had two sisters who kept the Stewart name and were brought up by their grandfather in Ford Mills/Heatherslaw.

red mail Charles STEWART, Janet HUNTER, Leadhills - Started family in Sanquhar
Charles Stewart and Janet Hunter are, I am informed, the couple that all Stewarts in Leadhills graveyard trace back to. They are not buried there nor did they come from there but their presence was felt in the Stewart name from 1800 until 1980 when the last Stewart in Leadhills died. They had a son before they moved to Leadhills, James b. Sanquhar 1795 (NOT the mine manager), John c.1799 (either Sanquhar or Leadhills) then all Leadhills Peter b. 1802, Thomas b. 1805, Charles 1810, Jane 1814 (who married Richard Dickson in Carluke), there could be others probably girl(s). Does anyone have any info on the father Charles Stewart, where he was born etc also Janet where from and where did they go after Leadhills. A huge amount of people trace back to them so somebody out there may just have it. James Stewart was picked up by the Earl of Hopetoun and became schoolmaster at Drem, East Lothian.

red mail Leadhills Library
New Statistical Account for Scotland Crawford Lanark Vol 6 p 334 ( 1835 ) Re Leadhills Library - in the North West of the parish one mile from Wanlockhead Dumfrieshire population 1,188.The library was instituted by the miners in1741 and consists of 1,600 to 1,700 volumes. The terms of admission and annual subscription are extremely moderate and consequently afford every facility for intellectual instruction. This in some measure accounts for the characteristics which the workers have long had of possessing a more than usual sense of intelligence for men in their situation.
