red mail Francis Hayes/O'Day - who was he?
Francis o'Day joined the army and said he was born in Fontstown parish in Athy, Co. Kildare in September 1839. His son later maintained that his real name was Hayes and that he'd lied about his age! He married an Italian girl in Gibraltar and eventually settled in Leicester, where his family stayed, but we can find no record of him after 1891. Did he return to family in Ireland before he died?
