red mail William Denne/Sarah Brett - (Teynham - Kent)
Sarah Brett and William Denne appear in Teynham c.1778. Theirs was a long and prolific relationship, but with some mystery. Sarah Brett was born in Reculver 1755 and first appears with William Denne 1777 in Sittingbourne at the bapt. of her first child Mary Brett. Father named as William Denne. Entry says Bastard. They next appear in Teynham where they continue to have children. Sarah b.1779,Ann b.1781 William b.1783 John Christopher B.1784 Elizabeth B.1785 (m.Charles Byron, d. Faversham1849) Thomas b.1787 Henry b.1788 another Thomas b.1790 Edward B.1793 and a stray Robert who cannot be attributed yet. At no point in Teynham was bastardy referred to, which makes me think there was a good reason for their relationship to be tolerated so well. All children took the name of BRETT, All children were acknowledge as William Dennes'. All children seemed to have a trade. There were many Dennes around Reculver and Teynham, all inter-related,all with the same names, but for the life of me I cannot find which family William came from. The family 'moved across the road' to Linsted at some point towards the end of the century, but I cannot find a death or burial for William Denne. Did he go back tohis own Parish? How I would love to solve this puzzle of many years standing. The William Brett b.1783 was my g.g.grandfather, shipwright, and appears in Sheerness 1806 baptising children with wife Elizabeth. White Chapel (Weslyan) I can't find their marriage. One of sons, James Brett married a Mary Ann Roff back in St Mary's, Teynham 1852. So there was still connections in the village. Their first child was born in Teynham Peat three weeks after the marriage!!! Was he away at sea until then??? Do the Church Wardens books make any note? Anyone who could throw some light on these intricate relationships would be thrice blessed by me. Strange that so many Bretts began there and no one is left.
