red mail Shortlands - Bromley's valley home - (Shortlands - Kent)
Nestling at the foot of the hill leading from Bromley's High Street, SHORTLANDS is a place of memories for very many people. I was born here, brought up here and went to school here. The main road through the village has been subjected to change of tradesmen, shops and environment, and its Valley School is keeping up with its age. Shortlands borders on to the recreation ground used circa 1935 for borough events, and its Martin's Hill overlooked the Crystal Palace, providing for many years a grandstand view to the Palace firework displays on Thursday nights. Inevitably the village has expanded, and now includes delightful residential roads along with those just as good, but graceful in old age!

Looking for any information on William Smith, his wife and family. The children seem to have been born in Strood, Kent, between 1889 and 1899. They are: Stanley Walter, Alfred William, Robert Eric, Mary & Esther Lillian. The whole family emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in, I think 1903 (or soon after). In the 1901 Census, the three boys were in a (boarding?) school in Maidstone. I have a fair amount of information from 1914 on but would really like to know who William's wife was and who were his parents and siblings. He may have come from Islington/Shoreditch and possibly had a brother, Robert George Smith, who mostly lived in Dorset. In Winnipeg, Stanley married Bridget Hughes, Alfred may have married twice, first to "Mary", then to "Bessie" and Esther married John Hewson. Hope we can help each other! Jan - Winnipeg
