red mail Southerden - (Broomhill - Kent)
I am trying to improve the Southerden family tree. So far it goes back to Samuel Southerden born in 1706 who had farms in Wittersham and Peasmarsh. Although they would appear to have been based in Kent initially , they populated Sussex areas such as Camber , Rye , Winchelsea , Hastings, but seem to have been centred in Broomhill , which at the time was in Sussex. My most "colourful" ancestor was Charles "Hookey" Southerden (B 26/9/1793 D 25/10/1875). He was a fisherman by trade, and it is alleged that he had a hand blown off by Coastguards or Revenue officers. He had a hook for a hand , hence "Hookey"."He" was used by Charles Dickens as the basis of his character "Captain Cuttle" in his novel "Dolbey and son". We are attempting to locate the portrait of "Hookey" which we do know exists. A "non-direct" relative , Charles Southerden , lost his life in the Mary Stanford lifeboat disaster. I would be very grateful to receive any information / photos / maps etc
