red mail Thomas H Barnes and Esther Osmar
Looking for the line back from Thomas H Barnes, born about 1817 in Tenterden. He wed Esther Osmar of Headcorn in 1843 in Ashford. Their marriage record says that they both were "of Churchyard" at the time. Thomas worked as a machinist for the South Eastern Railroad in Ashford. Thomas and Esther's son William Richard was two years old when the family left for America in 1854, Liverpool to Philadelphia. They settled in Juneau County, Wisconsin, to farm. Esther's line is better sorted out but the Barneses are a challenge! Thanks for any suggestions.

Caroline and John left the UK in August 1840, arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia in December 1840, aboard the "Royal Admiral". When John and Caroline applied to emigrate, there was a 2 year old boy listed in their application. They had not yet married when the application was lodged, so I don't know if the boy was his, hers, or theirs both. Caroline had a son, John William Avan, born in Adelaide on 2 March 1841. John Avan snr had died by then, as Caroline remarried to a Charles KING (c1803-1857, originally of Pinfarthings, near Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire), also widowed with children, in Adelaide on 15 March 1841. They subequently had four children, of which I am descended from one. I am very interested in finding out any information on Caroline's background - where she was born, if she had siblings, etc. She died in South Australia in 1870 and believed to be from Huntington's Disease.

William Gilson emigrated to Plymouth Colony in North America before 1634 with his sister Hannah's children, John and Hannah Damon. William and his wife Frances, who were childless, came from Feering, Essex. His sister's family ( husband, John Damon, born about 1595) was from Tenterden, Kent. William and his nephew built the first windmill in Plymouth Colony, suggesting he may have been a miller. Please contact me if you have any information about either the Damon or the Gilson family. There issome suggestion that John and Hannah Damon lived for a time in Holland and perhaps died there, but no proof. Clearly they were Dissenters, as were William Gilson & his wife.
