red mail Child Migrant - Oliveria aka Culver
John Christopher Robert (JCR) Oliveria/Culver, born to Yvonne Nelda Culver nee Oliveria in 1943, died 2 May 1989 by his own hand. He is buried in the St. Luke's Churchyard in Matfield, Kent. At the time of his death, JCR lived at 2 Sophurst Lane in Matfield. Known aliases were "Jackie," "Robin," and "Chris." His mother, Yvonne, married his father, Hubert Reid Culver, an American GI, in 1945, after her two boys had been born and JCR took on his father's surname, "Culver" somewhere along the way. The boys were being raised at St. Joseph's Home, Holtswhite Hill, Enfield during WWII so Yvonne could work to support them under the auspices of St. Vincent's Society by the Orange Butterfly Sisters aka "Crusade Of Rescue," now known as Catholic Children's Society. JCR's older brother was transported to Australia, likely w/o his mother's permission, at the age of 10 in 1952. It is not known how JCR was raised or whether his mother took him out of the system herself. The father is deceased and was sent back to the USA by the US Army 2 months after they did marry. He never returned to her in England and married again in the USA. JCR was married twice and had 2 daughters by wife #1 (Susan Saker) and two more children with wife #2 (Sheila J. Blackman nee Evans). JCR's mother, Yvonne, was born in 1922, thus would be 90 years old now, if she still lives. We are trying to learn whether or not she is still alive so a reunion might possibly be arranged between her and her 1st son who is alive and well at the age of 70 in Sydney, Australia. The Child Migrant Fund specifically offers money for such reunions. I would like to correspond with anyone who knew/knows the family and/or might have (or be able to find out) information regarding Yvonne who may have remarried. I am the 2nd cousin of the man, JCR's brother, who was transported and have his express permission and encouragement to research on his behalf. He simply wants to know what happened to his mother or whether she still lives. He has no intention of disrupting the lives of anyone.

red mail Hewlitt, Mercer
I am looking for information about the families of my great-grandparents. My g-grandfather, George Mercer, was a master tailor (with his own business) on the Pantiles. I think that he was born in 1845, in Frant. On 1851 census, there is a family called Mercer living in Frant Road. The father and also the oldest son, then aged 16, were described as tailors. There are several other children, with the youngest being a boy named George, 5 years old. The mother's name is Harriet. Can anybody confirm that this is the right family? My g-grandmother, Mary-Ann Hewlitt (known as Polly) was born in 1850, I think. Her father's name was Richard Hewlitt and he was a signalman at the time of her marriage to George Mercer at St. Stephen's Church in the Parish of Tonbridge, in 1870. My mother had thought that they were from Uckfield, and that Richard was a farmer but I haven't managed to find them there, nor in Tunbridge Wells, so far. Neither George's nor Mary-Ann's births appear to have been registered. Can anybody help me track them back from their marriage? Any further information regarding siblings, etc. would be most welcome.

Any information on people connected to this family would be gratefully received, as I haven't yet traced Elizabeth Downard prior to her marriage. She died in 1881.

red mail Roberts, Strange, Jeffrey, Emary, Brissenden
On 10 Mar 1800, at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London, Edward Hilder Strange (27 Nov 1772 - 12 Jun 1823) m. Jane Jeffery (9 Apr 1780 - 2 Nov 1831). They had several children; the eldest was Sarah Ashdown Strange (31 Jan 1802 - 13 Jan 1869, both at Tunbridge Wells). She married William Emary (of St. Clements, Hastings) in 1826. Their daughter was my g-grandmother, Harriette (17 Jan 1830 - 25 Dec 1899, both at Tunbridge Wells). William Emary died sometime between 1830-34. Sarah then married Benjamin Brissenden in 1834 (no children, as far as I know). About 1854, my g-grandmother, Harriette Emary m. John Roberts (b.1825, Fletching, Sussex). They lived in Tunbridge Wells until 1859, and then moved to Hadlow, where he worked as a traveller at the local brewery. They had five children: Caroline (b.1855, Tunbridge Wells), Charles Emary (b.1856, Tunbridge Wells), Elizabeth (b.1859, Hadlow), Edith Sarah (b.1863, Hadlow), and Kate (my grandmother, b.9 Aug 1867, Hadlow). John Roberts died at Hadlow on 21 Dec 1868, and was buried at St. Mary's chuchyard. Harriette returned to Tunbridge Wells, where she and her daughters were dressmakers (1881 Census). Charles was a grocer. William Emary probably was uncle or cousin to the family of Albert Emary in Hastings, Sussex (more details at my posting for Hastings). I would welcome contact from my cousins who share this ancestry.
