red mail Couchman and Hampshire families
Joseph Hampshire was married to Mary Couchman. She died on 12th.October 1824. Her burial is recorded in the Parish records of St.Mary Magdalenes church in Bermondsey. Her age is recorded as 34, which gives a birth date of 1790. As yet I have not found her baptism My interest is the Hampshire family. Joseph remarried in April 1825, which might appear somewhat unseemly to modern eyes, but many people in Victorian England had to remarry quickly especially if there were young children to look after. Details of the marriage at St.Marys Church, Newingham, on 24th.April 1825 are:- Joseph Hampshire, Widower, St.Mary Newington, witness James Hampshire Dianne Ann Couchman, Spinster, St.Mary Newington, witness Frances Timblick The above data was abstracted from the original Parish records. In particular, Josephs marital status is recorded as widower confirming this was indeed his second marriage. I was also surprised to note that Josephs first and second wives were both called Couchman. I believe both Mary and Dianne Ann were from the same family. I have more information to back this up. Frances Timblick was witness at both marriages.
Isaac Thomas Couchman b.1794
Isaac Thomas Couchman was born in Lee, Kent in 1794 and died in London in 1860. He was a builder in London, and went bankrupt in 1843. His siblings were born in Kent, but not Lee. He married Hannah Buckley from Bolton, Lancashire in 1816. There are various slightly conflicting stories about him and his descendents/ancestors. If anybody can shed any light it would be appreciated.
