red mail St Joseph and St Anne Orphanage
My Great Uncles George WATERS age 12 and Nicholas WATERS age 10 both born in London were not with their mother on the 1901 census and the only WATERS children of those names/ages/birthplace that I can find are Nicholas WATERS age 10 and John WATERS age 12 inmates of the St Joseph and St Anne Orphanage at Farnborough Kent. I am intrigued by this as although their father was dead by this time their mother was alive and living with her new husband Hugh McCARTON and other children in London. They were an Irish Catholic family and I gather that the orphanage was set up for catholic children, many of whom were sent to Canada when they were old enough.I am not able to prove as yet that these two little boys were actually my great uncles, so would be interested to hear from anyone who may know more about them, or the orphanage. Would the orphanage still be there or are there any records surviving to inform about the inmates i.e. their next of kin, a list of those emigrating to Canada, the ships they sailed on etc. Perhaps they didn't all go to Canada and some were set up in good situations in England. I would very much like to hear from any descendants of the two WATERS boys. Their half brother Edward Patrick BESTON was my grandfather. The mother's maiden name was Honora FITZGERALD, and she married (1) James BESTON (2)Nicholas WATERS (3) Hugh McCARTON.
