Baby abandoned 1948
I was found abandoned in West Street, Erith in 1948 at a woman's property, she saying she had found me. I was taken into care by the Police and NSPCC. Does anyone out there have any recollection of this incident or the person/people involved? My searches have all come to a dead end and I would be grateful for the smallest detail, please.

Hi my gt grandfather Gray Palmer took over his fathers shop in the High Street Saffron Waldon, Essex. His Gentleman Clothing shop is still their today. Four of his brothers, all Drapers by Trade, moved to Erith nr Darford in Kent. Frederick Palmer took over a shop at No 45 Pier Road. He lived their with his wife Elizabeth Taylor and his 9 Children. His brother William Brother worked and lived their too. Before they emigrated to Canada in abt 1910 Harry Palmer and his wife Mary Ann lived next door at 46, 47 & 48 Pier Rd with their two children and Harry's brother Alfred Oscar Palmer Harry retired to Newhaven House," Park Crescent, Erith. Alfred set up his own business as a General Draper at 97 Kew Road, Richmond abt 1911 I am looking for information on these characters pearsonica I visited this area two years ago and its now a modern Shopping Centre

I am looking for information on Joan Burles Nee Harding. She was born to Edith Ellen Harding in 1919, in the Mothers home in North London. Edith lived in Corinthian Road Erith at the time. Joan married Archibald James Mcarthur in 1940, and Arthur John Burles in 1947. She had 3 children to him. Joan Burles left Gravesend in 1949. Any information about where she went or what happened to her would be appreciated, as I have been unable to trace her since then.I is possible she returned to her family in Erith and there are many Hardings still living in Erith now, particularly Belvedere.

It appears that someone else has done our family tree and has more on the Hoxley family under 'Welt' family tree which I have not yet accessed. It would be intersting to know how the Welts are related! Abraham Hoxley or Hawkswell was born I believe in Little Thurrock at Grays. His marraige to Esther Coles on 27th Dec 1858 has Abraham 'Hawkswell' as the name and the witnesses were William Coles and Eliza Wilson who was I think Abrahams sister. My great great grandfather Able Hawkswell married at Stansted church in the district of Malling Kent and it would appear that they were a very close family. They mostly worked in brick making following in the footsteps of their father Henry.

I am interested in finding any descendants of the Corsan and Hoskins families of Erith who were linked through marriage twice and were very close, especially pre WW1. The men in the family were watermen and lightermen. The Hoskins family lived in the West Street area and the Corsan's lived in Wheatley Terrace Road and Appold Street originaly. Both families were buried together and close to each other in St. John's Churchyard. Charles William Hoskins married again after his wife Caroline Corsan died to Kathleen/or Katherine Primmett and I would especially love to get in touch with any of their descendants. Wesleyan.Twenty-three days after arriving in Australia Sarah married John West on 17 February 1851. Sarah died 29 October 1901. Buried at Alberton, Victoria. Australia. The passengers on the SLAINS CASTLE were a part of the Family Colonisation Loan Society selected under Mrs Caroline Chisholm. On 1841 census for Erith there is a Sarah Harvey age 15 staying with John & Sarah Ewers at Lessness House, Erith.

Charles Norman Kemp married Rosina Abrahams Sept 1912 Parish Church Erith.He was in the merchant service and they lived at 20 Maximfeldt Road.Rosina original lived at no 10.Their son William Charles Henry was born in the Dec of 1913 at the same address of no 20.I know that Charles died in Dec 1936 in the Isle of Wight and the Rosina got remarried on the 4th Jan 1937 at the Baptist church Belvedeux Erith.She married Thomas Nixon and at that time she was living at 2 Woodland Way Abbey Wood.There seems to be some feeling in the family that Rosina split up the family home but we are not sure quite how.If anyone knows of any old gossip that my help I would love to hear from you

Thomas Arthur House was killed, aged 44 yrs, as a result of enemy action at The Running Horses public house, Erith on 29/11/1940. He was an ARP Ambulance Driver and was killed with a Henry George Frederick Parry, an ARP Stretcher Bearer, aged 19 yrs. Both men were buried at Erith (Brook St.) Cemetery on 05/12/1940. Albert Sydney Humphreys, Fireman AFS, aged 50 yrs, was also killed in the blast. They are commemorated in the Municipal Borough of Erith Section of the Civilian War Dead Register and commemorated in perpetuity by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The Crown public house, which stood on the opposite corner to The Running Horses, was also hit and was so severely damaged it was never used again and was later demolished. The landlord and his wife, Mr and Mrs Withernden, were killed as were two ladies who died as a result of their injuries. The landlord of the newly completed Running Horses, Mr Zacharia Cole, was killed instantly having been standing at the front door of his pub at the time. Apart from the deaths of Thomas House and his colleagues there were no less than twenty people injured. One of the ARP wardens reported that the victims were still seated at the table and had no visible injuries, they were typical blast victims. The ARP post was located in the former Cannon & Gaze building on the Riverside site and had no refreshment facility. Mrs Cole is understood to have continued to serve drinks out of the back of the pub after her husband was killed.

He played football for Erith Crusaders during the 1930's and is remembered as being Erith's answer to Fanny Walden - the famous Tottenham Hotspurs winger of the 1920's. He died Jul 1989 Dartford.

I am trying to trace William Robert C. PYNE, who married my great grandmother Charlotte MOORE in Devon in 1890. He appears on the 1891 Census for St. Thomas as living with her in the parish of Littleham. His records note that he was born in Erith, Kent. I have found their marriage details (1890) but he has disappeared in the 1901 Census; at this point Charlotte had 5 children, now with the surname PINE. My grandfather ( the middle of the 5 children), told us he had gone to San Francisco to seek out a new life for the family - he was never heard of again! Elizabeth Sellwood born c1831 married James Weeks. Their daughter Minnie married my great-grandfather's brother, Samuel Coles, and then all they and their family of 12 or 14 children emigrated to Vancouver where the Coles live today. Another Coles married a Hudson, and I believe there is a Hudson in Erith now, as my great uncle Jim Coles, mentioned talking to his cousin, a Hudson.I believe some of the Coles were Baptists.

My Grandparents both grew up in Arthur Street, my grandmother Mary Adkins lived at No. 7 with her perents John and Charlotte and sister Matilda, in 1891 census (moved to crayford by1901) Grandfather was William Crispin at no.47 in same census his parents were William and Martha they had a large family, on the census their first five children are listed. William worked as a labourer, and coal porter when young. served in WW1 and was an air raid warden for alexandra road in WW2.
