red mail Hart - Hodgins, 1944 1945
RAYMOND B. HODGINS (of Woodstock Ont.Canada) was in UK during the war, & married JOAN MARGUERITE HART in BROMLEY Kent on 21 Sept. 1944, Vol.2a, pg 1793. Joan's address was 93 St.James Ave., BECKENHAM, Kent. My dad (Ray)was with the RCRs, badly injured in Sicily on 24-25 Dec.1944 & shipped back to Canada in April 1945. Ray had lied abt his age to get into the army, said birthday was Nov.1921, rather than Nov.1923, born in St.Marys Ont.Canada. Perhaps there was a child from this marriage, or were they ever divorced? In late 1960s I saw a Death Certif. in a drawer, I remember it said "Wife", & put it right back since I knew it was something I shdn't be seeing, so I think Joan died circa 1960s. Ray died Dec.25 1975, & my mother (not Joan Hart) passed away 2 yrs ago. Another twist: when applying for my "long form" birth certif. for a job offer in the US in 1981 (I was 35, born April 1946), all I got from Ottawa was the short form not naming parents, & was told then that I was adopted (by my true parents as a young child). Since Ray had already died, mum had to admit it, but said, "You ARE Ray's son"; that was the first I knew of this. Now I have dad's service records & found details of marriage to Joan Hart. So I'm wondering if I have a half-sibling in the UK, & perhaps somewhere other than Beckenham, since during war people got displaced. If anyone has info on Joan M. Hart Hodgins, or a child born 1944-45-46, I'd be very appreciative.

red mail Bowles at Parkhurst, Beckenham, Kent
Have finally traced down an ancestor, Joseph Bowles, who was a pharmacist in Quebec City in the 1870's. Found the family in the 1881 British Census living at Parkhurst, Beckenham, Kent. He is now 63, not employed but has a domestic and a cook so is probably retired to Britain. I am trying to find out anything about what may have happened to them after that (deaths, marriages of his two daughters etc.) about Parkhurst, and generally why Kent? Were there other family connections which may have taken them from Canada back to England (he was born Ireland)? They is some family connection to Kent as I found a reference that their niece, Mrs. Joseph Bowles Learmont, donated the former home of General Wolfe in Westerham, Kent, "Quebec House", to the National Trust. I would also be very interested if someone could explain the Bowles family connection to Quebec House.
