GI's in Stevenage
I'd be really grateful if anyone has any information about when the first "GIs" (American servicemen) arrived in the Stevenage area in the second world war. I know the first GIs came to the UK in March 1942, but when did they first show up in Stevenage? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
Mabel Culley - artist
I'd love to know more about Mabel, who lived in Fairview Road in the 1950s and 1960s and was an artist and (I think) art teacher. Mabel was born in Norfolk, but lived in Stevenage for many years and was well-known locally. She died in 1965. Mabel illustrated a book called the "Stevenage Picture Book" that showed views around the town and had a forward by Lord Jowitt. I think she specialised in watercolour.

Thomas Whittington of Stevenage and Knebworth was the keeper of the Swan Inn in Stevenage for many years in the middle of the 18th century.
