red mail W G Bennett Ltd and J Punter
Both of the above were coal merchants in St Albans in the 19th and 20th Centuries and Bennett was also a brck maker. He was based in Victoria Street whilst Punter was in Lattimore and Alma Roads. Both probably had their own railway wagons that would be used to bring coal from the collieries to the Midland Railway station at St Albans. I have black and white drawings of the wagons but no photographs and only sketchy information on the colours of the wagons and the lettering. Does any one have any further information?

All Saints Convent St Albans
My sister & I were sent to a convent in St Albans( Anglican) from our home in Newcastle in c 1949-52 . All Saints was an Anglican church. I know all of it's recent history, but am struggling to locate any records. About 10 years ago I spoke to the Mother Superior( now in Oxford) & she was rather vague to say the least. From a number of accounts it seems to have been a 'council convent' who took in evacuates. Another source states it being an orphanage/unmarried mothers home. All I was told was that it was a convent in St Albans. My mother never told us why-but a hunch that I have was that she may have been pregnant to a man who was not my father. I can remember the convent in fits & starts & did have a photo years ago of my sister & I in the playground. I had someone from Herts FH do a few searches for me a while back to no avail. Any info will be welcomed.

red mail Annie Howard (Norwood, Potton)
I am searching for clues to the birth and parents of Ann Potton born early 1830s probably in St Albans or Kimpton, possibly in the Kings Walden or St Paul's Walden areas. She was a straw plaiter, sewer and weaver and brought up six children. She married Samuel Norwood in 1853 giving her father's name as Henry. She married Francis Howard in 1878 giving her father's name as John. Her age varies widely on census returns. In 1841 she was living at Kings Walden with Sarah Martin (nee Potton) who I believe was her maternal grandmother, possibly her aunt. Annie's mother might have been Amelia Potton (married Thomas Pollard 1834 and died 1838) who was Sarah Martin's daughter born before she married John Martin. Any clues to help unravel this mystery would be welcome.

Back in 2005 I put the following request on Curious Fox: Mary Hobbs born 14 May 1862 at Millbrook, Bedfordshire was the first born of Daniel and Maria Hobbs. The family moved to St. Albans sometime after the birth of my grandfather George Thomas on 26 January 1870. Yet on the 1871 census she was staying with her grandmother in Millbrook. The 1881 census shows her living at 16 St. Peter's Street, St. Albans and working for the family business of Straw Hat Making. I would like to know who she married and where. Now that the 1911 census is available I have found Mary living with father at 128 London Road, St. Albans. She is now a widow with the surname O'Halloran. Can anyone tell me when Mary married Mr. O'Halloran.
