red mail Charles SMITH - Master Baker 1797-1866
Charles SMITH was born at 20 King Street, Seven Dials, St Giles, son of Carl Philip SCHMIDT (known as Charles SMITH in England) and his wife Sarah Susannah STYLES - he recorded his birthplace in the 1851 census so clearly that I know he wanted me to find him. He was a Master Baker like his father, a naturalised citizen from Germany. He worked in his father's Bakery at 20 King Street Seven Dials, St Giles. He married Harriott WILKINS of Chertsey in 1830 and raised a large family. They lived a few years in Tottenham, next he had his bakery in Ratcliff Cross from 1842 until the mid 1850s. Then he moved out to East Barnet where he died in 1866. I did eventually find the family in the 1861 Census in Whetstone. 1861 Census FHL BR Film 542701 RG9/790 Folio 42 Page 41 Whetstone, Friern Barnet, Parish Barnet; Schedule 224, High Street Charles SMITH Head Mar M 63 Baker b MDX London John J SMITH Son M 13 Scholar b MDX London Henzibar SMITH (Hephzibah) Daur F 10 Scholar b MDX London Harriett SMITH Wife Mar F 51 Baker's wife b Chertsey SRY Page 42 James USHER Serv Unm M 23 Journeyman Baker b BED Southall Rebecca OLIVER Serv Unm F 22 House servant b WAR Birmingham (daur Mary was in Shoreditch at her brother David's place as Apprentice Draper) __________
red mail Rawlins,Pearce
Looking for back history of the Rawlins family who were Firemen and chimney-sweeps in Barnet. My great grandmother, Rose Frances Rawlins married George Pearce, born 1866, and they settled in Barnet. She was the daughter of William Rawlins(?) who was the fire superintendant in Barnet. Several of her brothers were firemen, and the family had a chimney sweep business. I have the family history from then onwards, including a small photograph of her father and brother and the crew aboard a horsedrawn fire engine in Barnet, and her father left a diary of his time as a fireman , but I would be interested to learn where the Rawlins came from
