My maternal grandmother's parents lived at Stonehills in South Baddesley for a couple of generations before & after the turn of the 20th century. My grandmother, ELLEN RENYARD, worked as a housekeeper at the Pylewell estate, where she met my grandfather, HORACE COOKE, a gardener at the estate. Many of my ancestors are buried at the churchyard in South Baddesley. Interestingly, Renyard is akin to Reynard, French for "the fox". If you were to visit the house of "Stonehills" (at least as of 1998), you would note a weathervane on the shed with a FOX ON it!! Can't say if it's a coincidence or not, but the owners at the time were ironically French (& Vietnamese!) I welcome any contact with anyone who wishes to discuss my family roots, or anything of interest in the local area as my family can be traced back locally, at least to 1788. Neil K

red mail Marmaduke Langdale Horn - (Stoke Charity - Hampshire)
The death took place on Tuesday Aug 18 1953 of Marmaduke Langdale Horn, son of the late Mr. and Mrs.Horn of South Australia. Mr. Horn had lived for the last years of his life at "Michael's," Stoke Charity, the house which overlooks Stoke Charity Church from the east, and much of his interest during those years was centered in the lovely church of St. Mary and St. Michael, whose beauty he did much to restore. Mr. Horn's childhood was spent at Old Stoke, and it was to the memory of his father and mother and the happy days he spent as a child in this parish that he dedicated his later work and generosity at the church. In 1946 he had the fine tombs, which adorn the church restored, re-painted and re-gilded; George Nutt, a famous ecclesiastical artist, did the work, advised by Mr. Greening Lambourne, a well-known authority on church architecture and decoration. The work was beautifully done, and great care taken to preserve the paintings on the panels of the Waller tomb, paintings which dated from about 1530. The result was a return to bold and striking colours among the quiet grey stone of the church fabric-with quite excellent effect. Mr. Horn welcomed personally many visitors who came see the church, and often opened his house and gardens (with their beautiful show of dahlias) to them as well. He constantly guarded the fabric of the church. Many people would remember with thankfulness happy hours spent with him in the church and in his garden, and would have great grateful memories of his generous hospitality. During the war years Mr. Horn acted as Churchwarden for Stoke Charity-cum-Hunton, but he retired from office when the former Wardens returned from military service. He took a major part in organising the church fetes at Stoke Charity, but it was typical of him that his name never appeared. He was at one time Manager of Wonston Schools and a member of Wonston Parish Council. He was also a member of the Hampshire Field Club. The Memorial Service was held on Monday 24 Aug 1953 in the lovely old Church of St. Mary and St. Michael. The very simple service was conducted by the Rev. G. King; Psalm 23 was chanted and the Lesson read from 1 Thessalonians IV. 13. The hymn "Abide with me," was sung, accompanied by Mrs. Marks at the organ, who also played Handel's "Largo" and "O rest in the Lord." The service ended with the hymn "God be in my head" and the Benediction. Many friends had gathered at the church, showing the high esteem and affection in which he was held. They included the family mourners, two brothers, and Col. and Mrs. S. B. Horn (brother and sister-in-law), and Mrs. Higgins (sister).
