red mail Smith, Wicks, HIcks
Hello I am looking for any information in regards to the Smith/Hicks or Wicks family. My grandfather Frederick Albert Smith (or Fred Smith) was born to Mary Ann/e Hicks and Albert Smith maybe from Vernham's Dean 1882 (?). The Mary Ann/e that I have found is actually a Wicks not Hicks. Mary Ann/e's father was Charles Wicks also from Vernham's Dean but her mother another Mary Ann/e remarried a Charles Hicks. Confusing but correct, my great grandmother being raised by her stepfather must have used the name Hicks. Mary Ann/e and Albert had the following children Elizabeth (Vernham), Fred (Vernham ( I hope is my grandfather) Charles (Durley), Rose (Ropley), Florence(Ropley), Amelia(Ropley), George (Ropley) and Willie (unknown). The family left England for South Africa (East London)1894 on the Goth and that is all I have for the family. My grandfather seems to have married in SA and had a daughter Violet May he is a widower by 1901 and had served in the Boer War for 2 years and 5 months. he must have come to Australia without Violet May between 1902-1906. I need to confirm that the Fred in this family is mine and if anyone has any information on any of the family members or indeed Fred I would love to hear from you. I will eventually get to Kew to try and find Fred's attestation papers (he says on his Austrlaian attestation papers that he was in the Queenstown volunteers)and see if there are family details or see if I can afford a SA researcher to try and track the family or Fred on a ship to Australia. Many thanks for any help Deb

I am trying to trace Patience who I think was my g-g-g-Grandmother. She married Thomas Stevens on the 22 Oct 1808 in Upton Grey Hampshire, but there is a little confusion over her maiden name. I found the details of their marriage on the LDS website and one surname was submitted by a member of LDS church and the other came from the Chuch of Upton Grey Parish records, but the date and spouse are identical so I don't really want to rule either out at this time. I can find no trace of her birth but the 1851 Census shows that she was born in 1788 Herriard Hampshire. She and Thomas lived in Upton Grey, Hants and had seven children; Rachel, Hannah, Elizabeth, Amy, Patience, David and Thomas. If anyone has any more information about her birth, parents, siblings etc., please contact me, any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Jacqui
