red mail Clay - Primitive Methodists West Meon.
Have interesting stuff about 4 generations back - Clays of West Meon, would be interested in more. 1851 Census shows Ann Clay (nee Simpson) married to Charles Clay. Ann Clay died in 1853 and Charles Clay married an Elizabeth Hammond Merrett about 1860. They married at Portsea, but it seems Elizabeth came from Boxgrove in Sussex.Louisa Clay and Josiah Clay were Charles and Ann's offspring. Louisa went on to become my great gran. Charles and Elizabeth had Selina Merritt Clay in 1861. More Info if anyone recognises any of these.
red mail The Meon Valley Railway - around 1900.
As West Meon historians will know, there was much activity in and around the village from 1880-1907 when new railway lines were laid to link Alton with Winchester, also the construction of a massive viaduct which straddled the main road in centre of the village. What I didn't know until recently was that West Meon was chosen as the place to build dozens of temporary huts to accommodate all the navvies and their families who were involved in this massive contract. Does anyone, ny chance, know where these huts were sited? (There is a pub on the outskirts of West Meon called "The West Meon Hut" makes me wonder whether this is how it was so-named.) Thanks for any info in this regard.
