William Matthews was on the 1871 Census as a foreman in a tobacco factory.Annie Matthews19 years is listed as his daughter,who I think is my great grandmother.I believe his first wife,Annies mother was Sarah Elizabeth Germain and his second wife,on the 1871 Census was Esther Adelaide Bond.I believe the family may be Jewish as they lived on Queen Street,the site of the Synagogue.Any information will be gratefully received.

Looking for family of my gf. Parents were Benjamin Bown and Annie Carter. Annie died c. 1884 and Benjamin c. 1893. Siblings were Annie born c. 1876 and Benjamin born c. 1878. Walter came to Canada as a home child in 1895. Father Benjamin and children were in the Portsea Island Workhouse for a period of time prior to Walter being sent to Canada. Searching date of marriage between Caroline MELVERTON born in 1804 in Hampshire- d. 10.01.1850 Portsea Island and William ALLEN -(a sawyer) b. 1793/1798 - d.2ndQ. 1862 Portsea Island. Also names of their parents. They had at least 11 known children between 1825 and 1850, when Caroline died after childbirth. All their lives apparently stayed at Portsea. Thanks for any info.

In 1864 my 2x grandfather James White married Margaret Matilda Crowther in the parish of Portsea. James White is shown as 'Mariner", vessel "Richard Wilson(sp?)". Margaret Matilda's father is shown as James Crowther, Butcher, residence Vollins(sp?) St. Any information on the vessel (does 'mariner' mean he was in the navy?), or on James Crowther, butcher would be greatly appreciated. I can find no trace of Crowther in the 1861 census for Portsea. Thank you.

My great-grandfather, Frederick Charles Tipper was born in Portsea Island in late 1866. His mother Jane was from Carmarthen and his father Frederick was from Lyncombe, Bath. There is no record of the family on any census prior to 1881. They then appear in Bath, where another three children were born. I am trying to discover what took them to Portsea for Frederick's birth and where they were prior to the date. Frederick's father was born in Bath in 1828.

William Price(dob about 1869), Fishmonger, Bonfire Corner. William Edward Walter Price (dob about 1895) ran the shop - they moved in 1939. Francis J Price (William Price's mother born about 1837) went into workhouse by 1871 census. Henry Price - William Price's father was a builder then possibly a diver who drowned sometime before 1871. Would value any information, pictures of bonfire corner - before and after bombing in WWII.

1841 Census shows my great grandmother NAOMI PEARCE aged 10. Her father was JAMES PEARCE aged 45 in 1841. Wife Esther, Children were Jane, Jemmima, Kiza, Cornelius, Ebenezer, Naomi (my grt grandmother) Mary and baby Edward aged 3. of Union Road Portsmouth. NAOMI PEARCE married THOMAS HALES (a cabinet maker) at Holy Trinity church in 1861. Any information about both Pearce and Hales Family would be most welcome. I have researched some and have copy of death and burial records.Would like to know if there are live descendants of these families.Naomi died in 1895 and Thomas in 1904. Thomas McGuigan born 1843 had a family of 3 sons and a daughter residing at 17Beatrice Road Southsea in 1901. I am searching for the birthplace of my ancestor William Wyeth who moved from Portsea to Brighton in about 1820. He married Charlotte Todman in Portsea and they had a son Matthias. His name is recorded variously as Wyatt (marriage), Wyath (birth of son) and Wyeth (Brighton), but I am reasonably confident that they are all the same person. He died in Brighton on October 16th 1840, aged 53, occupation, beer shop keeper, which probably means he was a maltster by trade. I also have more information about his second wife Mary Twine and his later children if anyone is interested.

I'm interested in any information relating to the Burden family who lived in Portsea/Portsmouth from the mid-1800s. In particular: Adolphus John Burden, b1885 - Blacksmith in Dockyard and his children, most of whom served in the Navy: Frederick George, Arthur, William Adolphus, Walter, John, James, Lily, Charles Harry. I think it is possible that Adolphus' father may have been Cornelius Burden, b1835/6 in Fishbourne, Sussex.
