Information sought regarding my Great Grandfather, William Arnold. He was employed as an Estate Groom at the Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital and College. Report to Trustees, dated 8 Feb 1915, reads - 'Arnold, the coachman, has informed me today that he has decided to enlist in the Army Veterinary Corps. Some time ago he signed a householder's form as being willing to join the Army and he has now been called upon to do so. He goes to Winchester tomorrow. I have made arrangements for one of our own men, who has been used to handling cattle, to take his place.'
George Carter
I am trying to find a birth record for my great-grandfather George Carter. According to Census entries he was born in Alton around 1861. I have a copy of his marriage certificate from 1889 in Godalming, Surrey which gives his father's name as Thomas Parfitt Carter but I can find no trace at all of him. I cannot find George on any Census prior to 1891. Can anyone shed any light please?

Mary Oldfield nee Finnegan (Irish)married a Grenadier Guard called William Finden in 1848 in Westminster. William and Mary Finder are in Westminster in 1851 with Mary's children from her previous marriage Jane Oldfield (1836)and Mary Ann Oldfield (1838). William Finden was born in 1806 in Alton, Hampshire. He died in "Tumble Down Dick", Alton, Hampshire in 1854 but there is no further trace of Mary Finden after 1851.

I am looking for my grandparents John Taylor & Marie Fearn, they lived in Alton circa 1950. Granddad was in the forces and previously the family were posted in India. My grandmother I beleive worked in a hotel. Margaret louise Barnsley brn-1898 in Alton Hampshire. l think her family lived and tended the sheep for the owner of an estate. l am not sure if this was also in Hampshire. l do know she met her husband-Philip White a Canadian who was shipped to Eng during WW1. Looking for relatives of WILLIAM FRANKHAM/FRANKUM son of Henry Frankum and Sara Ireland. Henry died and Sara(h)married Alfred Bond. When Alfred died in 1903,in Alton Workhouse, William Frankham was the informant and lived at Albert Terrace Alton. Henry Frankums parents were John and Esther and Johns parents were George Frankum and Kesia Bull. William was bought up by his grandmother Louisa Ireland. He had an older brother Thomas and a younger brother Henry J who was bought up with the Bond family. Would like to hear from Frankums or Irelands. They all travelled the villages around Basingstoke Hampshire. Thanks.
Burial Records.
Does anyone have burial records for the Alton area? My great grandparents, Alfred and Sarah Ann Bond's deaths were registered in Alton in 1902 and 1903 and I would love to know where they were buried. It is possible they died as a result of a motor accident and wonder if anyone has access to things like local news reports. Thank you.

I am researching my family history. William Bradly Trimmer married Elizabeth Ann Brown in 1907, and his brother Charles Hall Trimmer married her sister, Barbara Brown in 1906. (The sisters were from Aberdeen and the brothers were born in Alton. I believe William Bradly lived there all his life). The brothers' parents were William Trimmer and Agnes Hall. Private PO/13839 Harry Clement Arnold Royal Marine Light Infantry died aged 29yrs on 26 November 1914 on board HMS Bulwark. The 15,000 ton battleship was embarking ammunition off Sheerness in Kent when it sufferred an internal explosion and sank without trace. There were only 12 survivors from a crew of between 700 and 800. My relative was the son of William and Annie Arnold, of Holbourne and husband of Annie R A Arnold, of Victoria Road Alton. He is listed on the First World War Memorial outside the Curtis Museum in Alton and he is also remembered with honour at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
