red mail Benjamin Bush
Desperately trying to find any details about Benjamin Bush who was married to Mary Hall at Hempstead in 1827 when they were showing as resident in the hamlet of Littleworth. Mary was born in Arlingham in 1802. Benjamin was a labourer or a blacksmith. Their first son Samuel ( a waterman and pilot on the River Severn)was born in 1827 and the second William in 1830. William was baptised in Saul. Mary was shown as a widow when she married William Bosworth in November 1832 in Saul. I would love to find out where Benjamin originated from and when he died.
red mail Watermen in census records
Many of the men at Saul and nearby places were river watermen and coastal mariners, and often away during census collection. They can usually be found under "Vessels" in the census, and as a bonus, you get the signature of the master. Here are some I have found where at least the master (in my family tree : LONG, MORGAN, CAMM) was from Saul. I hope this may help someone looking for that missing seaman :) 1861: Bridgwater Docks SOM, "Jane", MORGAN LONG HUGH. Lydney Canal GLS, "Gloster Packet", HUNT WOODS. 1871: Dunball SOM, "George", LONG THOMAS ROBERTS. 1881: Devonport DEV, "Royal Adelaide No 2", ABBOTT. Bridgewater SOM, "Garibaldi", LONG WEAVER CAVE SIMS. Burnham SOM, "Victoria", CAMM LONG GOWER GOODE. 1891: Ilfracombe Harbour DEV, "William", MORGAN NICHELLS POWELL SMITH. Dunball SOM, "Harriet", MORGAN HAYWARD TITCOMBE. 1901: Gloucester Docks GLS, "Neptune", LONG POWELL WOODWARD.
red mail George LONG and Mary WELLS
I'm descended from George & Mary LONG (nee WELLS) of Saul & Framilode. This was a family of watermen and mariners, and George also had a tea house and was a brewer at one time (perhaps not always tea in those cups). My direct ancestor was their son William LONG who was convicted of robbery (a 50 gallon barrel of cider off a barge) and transported to Australia in 1836 - my only convict ancestor, and glad to have one :) I think William was born in Saul 1814 but I have not been able to locate the baptisms for this year. I have researched this family - forwards, backwards, and sideways, as I do :) - and happy to share and compare notes. I even have photographs of Captain Walter LONG (in The Severn Vale In Old Photographs, Alan Sutton) and his family as well as the tea house. This was very likely William's youngest brother George Walter Wells LONG who was known as Walter; but perhaps a nephew Walter Wells LONG. More research needed :)
red mail Slater
I am looking for Mike Slater and who lived on a houseboat on the Framptoon/Saul waterways in the 1950s, he may even have built his own boat. I am told he was in the navy at one time. If anyone can assist me as to how I might find him, I would be grateful to hear from you. Pru
