There is a birth for a John William McDonnell in 1885. On the birth certificate, the name McDonald is crossed out and replaced by McDonnell. His parents were Annie (Halasy) and Michael McDonnell. Michael married as McDonald. The confusion with the surname appeared to be caused by the fact that Michael was illiterate. This family were Catholic and attendeed the Catholic Church of St Mary on the Quay.

Looking for informaiton on a John Francis PARSONS believed to have been born in Bristol 8 Jun 1823 and emigrated to van Diemans Land on board the Psyche arriving in Hobart on 24 Nov 1835 - he travelled as a free settler. Searches for his birth have also been fruitless at this stage - whilst numerous researchers give his birth date as above, this has not, AFAIK, been confirmed by any registry or Church records. He married, about 1844, Susan RYDER (1834-1900) and died at Caveside, Tasmania in 1903. Susan's parents were Joseph RYDER (abt 1795-1877) from Harberton and was transported to van Diemens Land for sheep stealoing arriving 21 Feb 1836. Her mother was Mary SALTERLEY (abt 1798-1878) also from Devon but no further informaiton about her is known. I am trying to research my mother's family name of Smith who were all born and lived in Bristol! My grandfather was Kenneth Royston Smith (1934-1982 Bristol) and I know he and his family were from Knowle, Bristol. His parents were Samuel Smith (my g-grandfather)(born 1872 & died before 1911 Bristol) and Mary Ann Griffiths - their other children were Raymond R, Joy P and Arthur J. I think they all died from a family disease (Huntingtons). Samuel Smith's parents (my gg-grandparents) were Samuel Smith (b: 1846 Bristol) and Catherine Merrick Everson - their other children were Hannah, Mary Ann, John, Abraham, Grace, William, Jane and Catherine). Samuel Smith's parents (my ggg-grandparents) were Samuel Smith (1817-1891 Bristol) and Hannah Smith (1819-1881) - their other children were Mary, Joseph, George, Albert, Elizabeth and Alfred. red mail Walters Hutchings Bristol and Diss, Suffolk
My g-grandfather Gilbert George Rawlings and Maud Alice Walters had 8 children all born in Bristol: William Gilbert Victor (b: 1903), Maud Alice May (b: 1904), William George/Henry (b: 1906), Ada J (b: 1911), Gladys Harriet (b: 1914), Percy Reginald (b: 1917), Albert Henry (1918-1991) and my grandmother Ivy Mabel (1921-1997). My g-grandmother Maud used her real maiden name on the first 5 birth certs of her children (Maud Walters), however, she then used the name Maud Alice Hutchings on the last 3 birth certs of her children. We think her "husband" Gilbert George Rawlings married in 1905 to another lady called Alice Hutchings and never divorced. Alice moved back to Devon (pregnant) and informed her family that her husband had died when he had in fact returned to my g-grandmother Maud. It seems they never married but used the m/c between him and Alice as their own - this was noted on his WW1 pension records as a query - maybe you received more money if you were married. It was after Gilbert's short stint serving for the army in 1914 that the next three children's birth certs stated mother as Maud Alice Hutchings! Maud died on 5 Feb 1956 at Snowdon Road Hospital, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Her usual address was 55 Fonthill Rd, Southmead, Bristol. Her age on the d/c means she was born about 1883. The only record I have found is a census record for Maud Walters born 1883 Diss, Suffolk but living in Bristol - I have yet to find a birth cert though. Any information whatsoever on the Walters family in Bristol or Diss, Suffolk would be much appreciated.
red mail Rawlings Rawlins Rollings Rollins Bristol

Gilbert's parents were Emanuel Henry Rawlings (1838-1881 Bristol) and Elizabeth Fowler (1839-1906 Bristol). Emanuel was a house painter. Emanuel and Elizabeth had at least 9 children all born in Bristol including my g-grandfather Gilbert: Henry (b: 1861 - married Mercy Ann and was House Painter), Frederick George (b: 1863), Harriet Ann (b: 1865), William (b: 1869), Francis Albert (b: 1871 - married Mary J and was House Painter), Edwin (b: 1875 - married Isabelle and was Butcher), Gilbert George (1877-1946 - married Maud Alice Walters and was General Labourer), Walter (b: 1880) & Charles (b: 1884 - was a Hairdresser). Emanuel's parents were George Rawlings (b: 1810 Langford, Churchill, Shareshill, Somerset) and Ann Smith (b: 1802 Dyrham, Glos). George was a Butcher. George and Ann had at least 4 children including my gg-grandfather Emanuel: Sidney Charles (1833-1903 Bristol - married Elizabeth Hignell and had various employment trades), Frederick (b: 1836 Cold Ashton, Bristol), Emanuel Henry (1838-1881 Bristol) and Rosina (b: 1840 Glos). He had two wives, sisters - Charlotte & Ann (Nancy) Summers born in Minehead. His son, William Pitt Pines, (1804) was also a Master Mariner, out of Bristol - he seems to disappear around 1850 - am seeking his death. His wife Ellen, who was a Pillinger, died in Bristol in 1866. Am also seeking information on her family as well plus the Summers sisters' family.

red mail Powell Family
I'm researching the Powell family of - I think - Bedminster, Bristol. I have some details which I would like to confirm from the 1891 census The head being Thomas aged 38. They were, I understand, a Quaker family and reasonably well off! M My connection is my Grt Aunt Florence Doherty who married the youngest son John (Jack) in 1918. Flo was from Wigan but ended up living in various locations such as Clifton in the 1940's where she ran a theatrical boarding house in Whiteladies Rd and Patchway in the late40/ 50's. Jack Powell was, I am lead to believe, a bit of a rogue and disappeared - family legend has it that he was found floating in Liverpool Docks but this has never been proved... They had two children Madge who died recently and Derek who I believe lives in Spain. Any info very gratefully received!

I am researching the life of my ancestor, the Bristol artist, Bartram Hiles (1872-1927). Whilst I am in touch with some other members of the Hiles family, I would be particularly interested in anyone who knows anything of Hiles' wife, Clara Louise , nee Hunt. Clara died in 1947. She was close to her sister, Alice Mary who was married to William Edwards. Alice and William moved to Trowbridge in the 1890s but returned to Bristol by 1911. Does anyone have any knowledge of Clara's sister? Clara and Bartram had a daughter, Aileen, who married Arthur Leonard of Bristol but died childless in 1936. What happened to Arthur? Bartram Hiles had 2 brothers, Albert Colston Hiles and William Henry Hiles. William moved to London by 1899. Does anyone have any information about Bartram's brothers?

William Hurlow Hagan
William was born in Bristol in 1859. Married Annie Louisa Sainsbury in Bristol in 1880. Had five children (2 girls, 3 boys). Annie died 1888. Willliam then married Sarah Ann East in 1889, they had a daughter Emily Maud in 1890. From this point I am fuzzy... I know that Sarah Ann married Charles Underwood in 1891 - I have the marriage certificate, which states she is a widow. I naturally assumed William had died but could never find a date of death. Sarah Ann had a son, Victor in 1895, with Charles. By 1901 Sarah was alone again, with Emily and Victor and about 5 lodgers. Again it states she is a widow, and is using the name Hagan along with the children. Surprisingly, William appears on the 1891 census in Exeter, living alone, his children still in Bristol with his father. In 1901, William appears to be living in Stoke Newington with a wife, Mary, 12 years his junior, along with his three sons. I cannot find a marriage for William to Mary, and I have had absolutely no luck finding his death. All help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
