red mail SHAPLAND/CHAPLAND in Whitchurch, Cardiff, Aberdare
I am researching a branch of the Shapland family who originated in North Molton in Devon, and moved to the Cardiff area. The earliest ancestor we know of was a WILLIAM SHAPLAND (born around 1800 in North Molton), whose wife was MARY (born around 1802 in North Molton). I believe that William may have had a brother GEORGE (b1803). William and Mary had the following children that I know of: HENRY (1828) GRACE (1836) JOHN (1839) and MARY (1840). Henry was at various stages in his career a fruiterer, hotel manager, potato merchant and market gardener. His brother John was also a greengrocer. By the time of the 1861 census these people and their families are all in Glamorgan (mainly around Whitchurch Cardiff) - and we know that Henry and his wife JANE (nee Harris) were already in Aberdare by 1854, when their oldest daughter MARY was born. We are stuck at this point, and would love to be able to find out who William's parents were - and further back if possible. (I would hazard a guess that his mother's name may have been GRACE, as both William and his brother George have a daughter by that name, but this IS only a guess.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sue
